Southwest gun shops - struggling to find a gun that fits

Please don't take this amiss, but are you happy from the coaching you've received that your mount and stance are good? It may be that the market doesn't make many guns that would fit you, and that a sustained search for one that does is genuinely the only solution, but it would be a shame to go to all that effort only to discover that the difficulty is primarily a matter of technique. Either way, I hope you find a great solution soon.

On another note, with your LOP. Off the shelf, you're looking towards more Brownings/Miroku, as I think thats closer to their standard stock lengths. So like the MK38 Trap is probably a decent shout to try before making the decision if you need a custom stock.

Yes, you raise a valid point here. Although I have had my SGC for over a decade and shoot most weeks in winter, most of it is just rough shooting so sometimes I won’t even take a shot. This means that over the years I have spent lots of time out shooting, but probably haven’t had much actual practice!

I suppose this leans things in the direction of an adjustable stock. If I do have an inconsistent mount as well as a poor gun fit I can always adjust the stock over the years if my mount or body shape changes. I really don’t like the look of adjustable stocks, but I can’t spend forever traipsing round the country looking for a gun that doesn’t exist, and I don’t have the funds for a custom stock. If this is the case there is only one solution I suppose - an adjustable stock. I’ll update this thread after I’ve handled a load more guns on Thursday!

Thanks,
Mike

Interested in this response, as that is where I had intended to go on Thursday. Could you give me a bit more detail? Feel free to PM what is great. Many thanks, Mike
love or hate SGC, they are a great retailer, they also supply most of the trade so use them direct or not you will most likely be buying from them!!! Fact! James at Exeter is absolutely fantastic, the guys at dorchester and newport equally offer great advice, sadly some people when asking question do not like the honest answer. i have been dealing with them as both a supplier and consumer for over 10 years years and cannot fault them.

if you are in the Exeter area its also well worth a drive out to Crewkerne to visit Coombe Farm Sporting and you will get excellent advice there also. good luck in your search

Or ask for Tom if you can't get hold of James
Very helpful

An MK38 trap without the adjustable comb most often has a higher comb than the adjustable version fully down. Readily available for about £800 in grade 1 form. Definitely worth a look at as a starting point.

I had a very informative and enjoyable morning at SGC on Thursday. Tom was an absolute gent and gave me the best part of 90 minutes. I handled a fair number of guns but straight away Tom said that there was absolutely no off-the-rack gun, which would fit me. It left us with only one option- an adjustable comb. I traded in the 686 and left with a new ATA sporter in walnut and black which I’m very pleased with. The build quality looks and feels very good and for the first time I actually have a gun that feels like it fits! Also it’s nice to have future-proof barrels and a good warranty as well. Thanks for the advice on this forum again. Very happy with the end, result and only have good things to say about SGC.
Cheers,
Mike

Suppose you speak to someone like Nigel Teague. I know he does gun fitting he is in Gloucestershire not too far from Falfield. He no longer does choke fitting, as he sold that part of the business. If you pm me I'll give you his contact number.

Hi all,
I'm struggling to find a gun that fits and wonder where might have a good selection of guns I can pick up. I need a longish stock (14 3/4 - 15") and a high comb as I have high cheekbones like Kate Moss. This means every gun I mount I can't see the rib - some models I can almost see the bead but not enough to feel it fits well. The obvious solution is to get an adjustable comb and extension on my 686 stock but I really don't like the look of them! I'm not wedded to any brand, and I'd even consider a side-by-side if it fitted beautifully.

My local gun shop has been very patient with me and stood there handing me gun after gun to no avail. Really, I'd like to walk in somewhere and have a huge selection which I can pick up without asking to handle each and every gun, which gets very time consuming when there are other punters who need serving. I've been recommended Ladds in Crediton and Sportsmans in Exeter. Which would be best to handle lots of guns without wasting lots of someones time?

Any guidance appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike
Hi Mike , i have shot for many years and have changed guns more time than i can remember for the latest fad , I have found out through much pain that to get any gun off the shelf to fit perfect is impossible . all serious competition shooters had the stock made for them or alter the stock to fit . What i have done for the last few years is , seek the gun i want , if it feels and fits ok i then book a gun fitment and any alterations done . i then spend hours with a mirror on gun mount .

Hope that helps
Brian

You need a rfd who offers a fitting service. I bought a shotgun last year from Weldon gun room in Northumberland. Wrong end of the country for the OP obviously. But their gunsmith watched me shoulder various guns, paired me with one that was closest to my needs and noted what adjustments I needed. I didn't need a cheek pad but the butt pad needed to be extended. When he was happy we went outside and shot a few clays while he watched how I was mounting the gun. The correct butt pad was made up and fitted as part of the price.
Left to my own devices I doubt I'd have chosen the gun I eventually bought but without doubt it's the best fitting gun I've ever had and it's improved my shooting considerably.
Moral of the story: don't worry too much about what guns they've got in the racks. Just find a dealer with an in-house smith who offers a proper fitting service. They will match you to the right gun much quicker than you'll find it yourself.
