Squirrel Trap

Can I have recommendations for best grey squirrel trap please - preferably one that kills the little buggers? Thanks in advance.

KOROS are okay. WCS tunnels are excellent but expensive. I'm thinking of switching to body grip which are a cheaper option.

Here's a link for KOROs

Just a thought - would a conventional spring rat trap work mounted on a tree trunk with the bait side down?

No. They'll laugh at it.
I know people have had success with the MK4 Fenn but I'd be more inclined to us a MK6.
Magnum body traps are deadly if you set them correctly.

They're not cheap but the Kania traps work well, so well in fact that one year I had one set about five feet up the trunk of an oak and caught two well-grown fox cubs in it! (not at the same time)

I too have caught hundreds with Mk4s , I set a trap each end of the tunnel with a half maize cob pushed onto a long screw in the middle. Even so, I have had a squirrel somehow caught in both traps, actually escape when I tipped the tunnel over! (They aren't a very strong spring). Never had that happen with Bodygrips as the bait can be put onto the trigger.

6 foot length of 4 inch plastic pipe. Block one end with plant pot. Prop at 30 degrees against a tree. Spray inside with silicone spray , bait outside and a foot down with peanut butter. Check twice daily and dispose of humanely

Before a discussion on traps and trapping there should be a risk assessment carried out and should there be any potential to trap a red squirrel you would be limited to live traps not spring traps. Another question to answer would be whether you can visit the site every 24 hours as a minimum, good practice would be twice a day, 12 hours apart with live traps.

If you have no potential to capture a red and can visit the set trap every 24 hours then the Fenn Mk4 set in a tunnel with restricted openings with the trigger plate baited with a blob of peanut butter will do the trick.

Some of the comments on this thread may be in jest but please be aware this is a public forum and some of the posts are in support of illegal activities.

Thanks L. No issue re reds - they are very few and far between in NI and pretty much confined to the few nature reserves we have, the nearest being 60 miles from me. The location is my garden so the necessity for checking will also be met - I wouldn’t consider a trap otherwise. Grateful for your advice - it looks the Fenn Mark 4 is the best option.

@Foxyboy43 in that case a Fenn mk4 or a springer is the king, any spring trap on the approved list will do, just don’t go for a weak copy.

my advise would be to make a 15 to 18” long tunnel with just enough space to fit a set and sprung trap, about 6 1/2” internal width and height. Drill some holes to post lengths of fence wire through as guides to stop dogs noses etc from getting in and put peanut butter on the trigger plate. Don’t load the area around the trap or box with seeds or nuts as all you will get in the trap is black birds and mice.

some images to give you an idea
