Stalking trousers for the (Scottish) hill

Under stalker way up there had the best rig I have seen. Joiners breeks out of b&q complete with knee pads. Pair of army surplus gortex breeks on top, used to be £20 a go.

I have Harkila but when they give up the ghost...

I haven’t tried it myself but I‘m planning to. A pair of tight fitting and well insulated long johns and an army gore tex over trouser. The idea is that the over trouser will have a very slack fit and therefore be naturally ventilated to some degree while still keep the wet and wind off. This would be for winter conditions and moving about but not sweating excessively. Has anybody tried this?
Tried it yesterday. Not with long johns underneath but with a pair of light weight Fjällräven G1000 pants.
I was walking for 2 1/2 hours as a beater through wet woodland with lots of bramble. The army over trousers are really great. The brambles were no issue for them. Very robust. And due to the wide fit they didn‘t restrict me even in extreme movements. No leaking and no sweating. They cost me EUR 14. 😳 One of my better buys.👍

Ive used these in Scotland for years: Durable Waterproof Trousers - Green

Amazing value, and coupled with a thin merino baselayer they are warm, flexible and totally waterproof. They are a bit noisy as they are Ripstop nylon, but on the hill less of an issue vs lowland stalking. They are a proper trouser, not an over trouser.

I’ve been using Shooterking Venatu trousers which I really rate but at the weekend I was finally able to comfortably fit back into my Haggart tweed plus fours from 20 years ago and they were a revelation, toasty warm and comfortable all day long in torrential rain.

Just as way of an update, I used the Kuiu Yukon trousers with their merino long John's on underneath and was warm, dry and comfortable all day when out last winter in some truly miserable weather, one day I thought I might have to take one of the other rifles to the hospital as he was close to hyperthermia.

Not with Army overtrousers - but in principle, yes if it's frosty-cold long underpants under a lightish gortex-type trouser (Kammmo, or some old Harkilasin my case) work well for me.
