Stutzen Rifles

The comb raiser is now wood, rather than the neoprene monstrosity in the pic. Not the most professional job but it works and is in tune with the rest of the rifle

If you don't find a an old Sako fullstock in .243 within the week, give up and order a new Sako Bavarian stutzen.

Funny you should say that, I have just arranged to view a sako fullstock once lockdown drops. Hopefully it will fulfill expectations!

Decided I need something to look forward to once all this Covid19 business dies down and I get some time away from work in Accident and Emergency.

Got a hankering for a Stutzen rifle in .243win. I'm interested in what you folks think?

Just planning to use it for stalking, dont want a moderator on it, and I already have a 270win for if I am ever lucky enough to get a chance to stalk Reds/Sika in Scotland.
Had one the Mannlicher M in .243.A very nice quality rifle but not the most accurate.Probably ok for woodland stalking.

I found that moderated stutzen. Looks just as ridiculous as I remember View attachment 155017
It is true that the perfect beauty of the stutzen is gone with the moderator attached, but I don't think it looks any worse than any other moderated rifle and very practical. Short, light, low noise. And when you are not using the moderator you have a beautiful rifle. I like this option. Thanks for posting as I had not realized you could do this.

They are a lovely looking rifle, but I personally wouldn't shoot a rifle without a moderator now. There are just so many benefits with a moderator. Wood is not practical for a modern day working rifle. Crawling through mud in the rain in the winter, synthetic stock, stainless steel and moderator every time! If you only stalk a few deer in the summer and noise and recoil are not an issue - then why not?

It is nice to have the bottom of the barrel protected from knocks. As for mud etc the wood stocked Lee Enfield did OK in two world wars. But for plastic lovers maybe someone does a plastic stocked stutzen rifle in stainless steel. Better still, why not make a SS rifle with an integral moderator in the shape of the stutzen stock? Silence, looks, weather-resistance and handiness.

Yeah I hadn't realised it could be moderated either, but to me it just loses some of the appeal. All my childhood shooting was with unmoderated rifles in South Africa so moderators were a bit of luxury really when I got my FAC.

While I would love to say I shoot enough to warrant a working rifle, I sadly do not have the means to do so or the land. This does mean I have plenty of time for gun cleaning/aftercare though!

My favourite go to rifle...

Sako AII (2) Stutzen in .243
Fantastic on the hill or in the woods

It is so light and small compared to my .308

I've found myself a sako a2 fullstock at a very reasonable price! Might actually be able to collect it soon if I've deciphered Boris' message correctly.

Do you use yours with open sights or with a scope?
