The shark deterrents have absolutely no effect.
I was given the task of testing three of them about 10 years ago.
A good way to accidentally taz one's jewels underwater, or taz one's mates, but as regards a shark, has nil effect.

The Australian navy did a nice test on one offered by a chap from S. Africa. As the chap was about to jump next to a shark while wearing his device, he was told that in Australia they don't things that way any more. The navy officer attached the device to a lump of fish, threw it in, the shark ate it whole in one gulp and swam away.

The devices increase the risk of being bitten, because they embolden the diver to do dumb things close to sharks.

They may have an effect on salties, because salties swim slower and come in from behind rather than below.
