Suspended gralloch set up for pick up trucks

Was this something you have bought or something you have made yourself?
Bought the basic item but have now extensively modified it to make it lighter, easier to use, more compact to fit in the car, and to work with my internal car winch for raising/lowering the animal as well as dragging it inside in the sled.

Couldn’t you do something like this off the tail gate and then attached by rope from the top back to a tying down point somewhere near the bulkhead? Might need something to stop it moving side to side but it’s quite simple and compact compared to the hoist mounted ones.

These are good for roe and muntjac but struggle with anything larger than a fallow calf. You often end up working on your knees. No need for an internal winch as a small 2m ratchet strap at the top will lift all of the smaller species comfortably. Pictures of those I used to make in use on my old FL2 and current dS.

It is true that with the fallow bucks the head is on the floor. It’s good enough though for me, the duster doesn’t have endless space for big bits of kit.

Nor does the dS - all of the framework breaks down into 6 pieces and is stowed alongside the sled, the electric winch is at the head of the sled bolted to the plywood base and in front of that is my box of off-road recovery stuff. Had 4 fallow does and a calf in the sled 2 weeks ago (briefly) but frankly I won’t be doing that again I hope any time soon. Two large beasts in the sled makes it very comfortable and the winch can pull the sled inside with the beast(s) in it which saves my ailing back greatly. I hasten to add that I still carry my tailgate strut too so the gibbet only gets used for fallow.

It always worth trying to do a suspended gralloch because it gives you a better presented carcasses but I also agree it's not always possible.

Very neat - anyway mines fine for me, yours does look good. That’s a pricket in my photo, neck just off the ground. I don’t really shoot big bucks, fine for does and prickets for me anyway.
Also it cost almost free,
Which is my favourite price…

@Dave RG I cut a piece of galvanised steel rectangular section to just fit across the load space where the rear seat restraint wire brackets are located, drilled 2 holes at the ends, one through both upper and lower sides of the section, the other on the top only and bent 2 securing M8 bolts into J-shapes to clamp the bar the the seat brackets. The winch was directly bolted to the steel section. The elevated arrangement worked well, better than the current dS fit which has the winch on the floor. Last picture was an early “mock-up before I added the plywood floor and went over to a Jet sled.

Yup - trees can be a bit few and far between where I stalk and frankly, I hate dragging too so if I can drive to it, I do. If not, I get the quad and tow the fallow to the car in a sled. You have many years on me but my back and neck are buggered so it’s about working smarter not harder so hopefully, I can still be doing this at your age 👍

Here’s a picture of one I made a few years ago. I never found the ones which connect to the 50 mm ball very stable, so I made this one.
The long peg on the left of the picture went through the Dixon bate type tow ball.(I also made one which bolted to the height adjustable Stye tow bar).
The long box section goes through the vertical box section which puts all the weight onto the foot on the ground.
The length was designed to allow the tailgate to be lowered and as can be seen in the picture the top half rotates on the joining piece in the middle.
The adjuster was a top link of eBay, so as long as you can position the vehicle flat left to right you can level up the hoist.

I’m struggling to upload the other pictures, I will post them when I can.

I have a simple pulley block rig, made with two yacht pulleys and rope, S hooked to roof bars. Used for fallow mainly and lowers on tow bar mounted game transporter. Allows for clean gralloch and keeps all mess and ticks out of car. Would post photos but car in for repair after reversing into a tree extracting a deer after dark! FFS
