Swallow, Swift and Martin watch!

Heard the first Cuckoo yesterday morning, which reminded me to look out for the shallows for the rest of the day - as they've arrived on the same day for the last 15 years, but even with lakes in the garden which is the easiest place to see the swallows, no sign as yet.

Nightingales here this week, swallows been here a week. Kites munching leverets and Spar eating English hen, everything's right in the world.

At last - first pair of swallows on telegraph wires outside the cow shed few miles outside Canterbury towards Dover

First swallow went over the house yesterday morning. Today there was one checking the nests in the stables. Really hoping to get a good brood this year.

We are just outside Uttoxeter, Staffs.

Ours are here in numbers now, I'm really surprised they turn up so late in other parts of the country north and south of sunny Chorley. Went to little crosby near Liverpool yesterday on the way home drove through a part of west Lancashire that I've known for thirty five years and spotted a bird off prey, that didn't look familiar. Checked it out from the bird books when I got home thinking it was a marsh harrier but from the book it looked more like a hen harrier . I'd be interested to be educated on this one. Obviously we were near the coast yesterday but we are also within striking distance of the trough of bowland.

I heard and called in the first cuckoo of the year. He came in like a train, looking for a fight with the interloper 😀

First cuckoo heard in Herefordshire last night, that’s swifts, swallows and sand martins seen and cuckoo heard in the past 3 weeks or so

Saw a couple of swallows seemingly passing us by heading westwards in the sunshine as we barbequed on the farm. So I excited I jumped up and pointed like a seven year old.
We have seen a slow and steady decline here in South Wales as mentioned before. There was a survey done on the decline but surprisingly never heard a thing after participating.
Would be excellent to see a steady annual increase in house martens and swallows.
The swifts I wont know about until I go to the pub this friday, the village pub (Grosmont) is brightened by them wheeling and diving near the local church.

The Osprey was fishing on Friday evening, the wife was telling me it was getting a hard time after catching a fish in front of the house.

A few more swallows about and a couple swooping about the porch nests tonight.

Tom up the road heard a cuckoo at Aldie Burn on Sunday morning.

Still a few pinks knocking about and a few wigeon at the burn as well.

Cheers

First House Martin seen near here here yesterday and reliably informed that the Cuckoo's have reached Rogart. Heading up to the far NorthWest for some fishing next week so hopefully will see some of the more unusual visitors!
