SWISS ARMS 'SHR 970' Rifle

Anyone owns a Swiss Hunting rifle (SHR 970) ? I see they are highly regarded in America, but have never seen one here. Looks like a quality product, well like most things Swiss. But I would like to hear from someone who owns and shoots one.

Had one, .308 with a fluted barrel. Nice gun.
Best thing I liked about it was the iaflon coating, very low maintenance.
I found parts for it in Switzerland however getting them out was akin to the Italian job so I moved on.

I have two SHR 970 rifles, a .308 Win and a .280 Rem, with extra barrels. And a friend, who only has one big game rifle, bought one in .30-06 after shooting mine. He shoots very little, but checks his rifle a few times a year, fires a cloverleaf with the 180-gr Winchester ammo from Walmart, and kills a deer or two.

They were made by JP Sauer for Sigarms, but when the importer to the USA began selling the 200 and 202, and the 101 was in the pipeline, they dropped the SHR 970, which was selling for $425.00 alongside the 202 at $2,500+.

I bought extra magazines, barrels, synthetic stock, and some parts for mine. With the synthetic stock and Teflon-like Iaflon coating on stainless steel and aluminum parts, it is pretty weather-resistant. It takes down for travel, which is nice, uses common bases and rings ( including Picatinny rails of 0 and 20 degrees ), has a nice trigger, and I have never seen one ( or the tactical STR ), that did not shoot way sub-MOA out of the box.

They continued to be sold in Canada for a few years, until Sigarms changed owners again, so you may find more rifles and parts out of Canada.

A great little riffle. I bought one of here and it shot great for a while. I took it out of the stock and discovered the alloy action was cracked where it clamps the fluted barrel in place. It appears the previous owner had overtightened the clamp.

I gave it to James Clarke with the Cmm moderator and I think he was going to try fix it. Not sure if he ever did?

Spares can be a problem but I liked the riffle.

I bought one off a SD member a few years back. 25-06 with a 30-06 barrel and wood stock. I've since replaced the stock for a factory synthetic and had new blocks made. Lucky to have a friend willing to bring me some bits from the U.S.
Lovely rifle, that's very well made. as it's multi calibre up to 9.3mm, the action is heavy duty. Contrary to earlier post, my only criticism is with the barrel coating. Totally rustproof but does scratch easily. Most noticeable where I've been taking my T8 on & off. I've worked up some impressive loads for the 25-06 and it's my most used deer rifle. 1st out of the cabinet.
Would I buy another SHR970? Bloody right I would but I'd make sure it came with as many spares as possible.

Thanks for the details

Like the 25-06, must say. Thanks for your time

I’ve had the SHR970 deluxe with a set trigger in 25-06 for about 15 years had it re barrelled with a pac-nor 1-9 twist barrel about 5 years ago (stayed 25-06) when rebarrelling the smith had to use the old barrel as an adapter for the new barrel because of how the bolt locking lugs are. If you get one with the wood stock you will need to stabilise the fore end, I had a mate mill it out a bit more than it came like and stiffened it with 2 carbon fibre tubes (like arrow shafts) which stiffened it up perfectly

I have one in .223. incredible accuracy and nice to use. Would be great if anyone knows of any spare barrels or mags in the UK.

As above , great rifles . You can still get parts for them here , but they are getting harder to find , and more expensive when you do . Western Gun Parts in Edmonton , Alberta , had parts for them . Ellwood Epps in Ontario would also be a good place to look for hard to find parts .

Thanks for the info AB. I wonder how easy it is to get parts sent from Canada to a UK firearms dealer ? has anyone tried this ?

Since yesterday, I now have two. I traded an old pair of binoculars for the "new" one in 30-06. A 9.3x62 and a 30-06 make a good pairing. I also now have a total of four stocks, two walnut and two synthetic and none are the same. The 30-06 came with what appears to be a single-set trigger. (Yet to be adjusted...does anyone have experience adjusting this trigger?) I'll post some photos shortly.
