Swiss powder load data

Great info Laurie
I’ve switched to rs62 in my 6xc with great results and an easy 3000 ft/sec with 105 gr bullet .
Rs60 gave (like Laurie advices) 3150 plus ft/sec but barrel life would be much reduced

very well put together info my norm charge was 51gr / imr 4350 swiss data gave me a working data sheet starting at 52 gr/ rs62 to give my the nr same fps, but less cup so I was happy to move up to 54 grs unless the new reach powders come in to replace the imr 4350, that is the IMR Enduron 4451 , but by then due to the short sightedness of getting it out there for us to buy ? I feel i'll most likely stick with RS powders from now on.

any top end load for a powder when shot in strings is going to lower barrel life, I'm not sure RL17 is any worse than the others in that respect, maybe Laurie can comment on this ?
He has, lots of times stating it’s a barrel burner!! That’s why I only use it for long range loads in the Creedmoor

40 something percent is what it's quoted at in 'Propellant Profiles'. This is a Wolfe Publishing collection of articles published under that title in 'Handloader' magazine by a number of American gunwriters and is a very useful reference work as it usually quotes kernel dimensions, density etc. On nitroglycerin and any other ingredient's levels, the writers quote information from the manufacturer and/or importer.

N540 has the highest specific energy of any powder listed in QuickLOAD IIRC, checking it now shows it and N530 as 4,100 KJ / Kg. The double-based RS powders are all listed as being under 4,000, the Alliant Re series as 3,900-3,990; and even the very hot Norma MRP with 12.5% nitroglycerin is listed at 4,020. Other Viht N500s are mostly 4,050 and the Handloader technical descriptions mostly quoted levels in the 20s % by weight for them. I killed an expensive Bartlein barrel in 308 Win with a 155gn Scenar and N540 load in 1,300 rounds in year one of F/TR competition. Although 'hot', it was by no means over-pressure and some other F/TR competitors only got 1,000-1,100 rounds with N540 from their barrels. That's why nobody of that generation in this activity will use it now.

Thanks that's exactly what I was looking for.

I do not intend to just start substituting one powder for the other and would certainly not just substitute loads data either.
Just trying to build a greater knowledge and understanding.

I must say Laurie's explanations are excellent but have at present, just given me lots more questions and thoughts. But I guess that's what it's all about.

Thanks guys

Steve
