T8 Moderator Failure.

Saw some threads recently about `tinkling` noises in T8 mods.... and have been having the same thing happen to me. Well, I was out for a couple of muntjac the other week, and this was what happened to mine when I fired the second shot of the day ... It made me jump a bit I have to admit. I thought I was reasonably good at keeping my kit well serviced, clean and maintained !!! Have got a Roedale Delta V modular suppresor on now, and I have to say it it fantastic - and so much easier to clean and inspect.

Checking my records for the .243 on which it was fitted, this mod has only had 1743 rounds through it.

Just found a pinhole puncture in my T8. Its been in use for about 10 years now so no complaints but as trouble said, if you use it it wont last forever.

bit of weld and it will be good as new!!

Had the same thing with one that I got used and keep thinking about a weld to fix it as suggested. I got a new one to replace it instead and had some advice to extend its life.

Always remove it after use from rifle and allow to air dry / acclimatise to room temp before storage.

Never had a problem with zero doing this.

Contact VON on here.... cant remember exactly, but im sure he told me Jacksons will replace them?????????

Just a question. Did you always removed the neoprene sleeve following an outing? Especially if wet or out in the cold? It looks very green/tainted. Ive got the same mod and always dry adn spray it with WD40 inside and out.

I think I will remove mine now when on the range and only use when required, might extend the life of the expensive item

looks like a pinhole caused by corrosion, I would expect this to be the tip of the iceberg, probably the whole interior is eaten away and this is just the first bit to go, bigger can of WD40 needed ? :D

Philip, I wanted to do that but you'll have to check it has the same zero when fitted or removed. My T8 makes a big difference on my 308, at 100m it is high and about 2" right with the mod screwed on compared to when it is removed. I read somewhere that this behaviour is normal, don't know what other peoples experiences are.

Hi Stevie. Only if I was out in the wet would I fold the sleeve off afterwards to dry out. If the weather was dry I left it on, and always used Napier spray inside when the mod was fired thru. Probably was user error at some point, so I will learn from the feedback here. Mod was RFD`d for a new one as I did not trust a repair job on it. Confidence is everything...

All the best.

Thanks Von, but the T8 was RFD`d for a new one as I was not confident in the mod when I saw the rusting around the hole. Fortunate to be able to get a new one, but I was not sure if there was further corrosion that would cause a bigger problem next time.

Appreciate the post though, thank you.

My last T8 blew 2 holes through, about 1.5" from the end. The moderator was about 2 hours old. I was shooting in a .243 with 100 grain factory at the time. I got my money back and purchased a Jet Z. that was about 6 years ago now, I like em so much i have purchased another 2 for other calibre's and would not recommend any other moderator.

I always spray at bit of WD40 into mine after its been fired through. It doesn't matter if its been a wet day or not , the residue left by the burnt gases is not only highly corrosive but also it attracts moisture ( its a bit like Urea).

Take of the neoprene cover every time too.

Something also noticable is if you do use WD40 religioulsy is that it will start to seep through the weld eventually and you get dots around the 'sleeve'. Its not about to blow up , its just that weld is ever so slightly pourous, especially a fine oil like '40'.

If you see spots around the sleeve and it has never been cared for then it is probably about to let go.

I'm not unhappy with the reflex but when I do replace it, it will be with a Wildcat. Just so I can take it apart and chuck it into an ultra sonic cleaner.
