Taxidermists and tanners

G'day all,

Planning on a hunt to the UK mid year. If successful need to figure out how to get heads back. Undecided whether to have our bucks mounted in the UK and ship them to Aus, or just have the skulls euro'd and hides tanned to save on freight and do it back here.

Either way, appreciate any suggestions for taxidermists and tanners.

Well, I guess one question is how familiar are your taxidermists back in Oz with how U.K. species, presume you’re on about roe/muntjac and CWD look etc? And therefor how good of a job will they do with unfamiliar species? Personally I’d be looking for folk that know them well and do them regularly, in the U.K. unless you have a really well trusted one back home.

I live about an hour from one of the most respected taxidermists in the country, who is good with many international species.

It comes down to overall cost which way I go.

There is by the way only one hide tanner in the UK so maybe a bit of a wait

As far as I know raw hides going into Australia have to be radiation treated in Australia before being released

Definitely can't take them back with me to Aus. Options would be to have them taxidermied and sent to aus or have the capes tanned and sent.

You can't live in Australia without dealing with long waits, it is what it is I suppose.

Just imagine the outcry if sunak were to do this, the libtard bunny huggers would go into cardiac arrest!

What are the generally accepted prices for Taxidermy in the UK? Thinking per species. Red, Roe etc

I usually boil my heads, although I do also bury some as well. However this year I think I may get a few heads done by someone so thought I better ask the industry standard prices in 2023.

Also how much better are the guys who you pay vs doing it yourself?

First off I would recommend Gary Knight pretty nice taxidermist and does his deer right lmho.

Roe deer range from £350-500, CWD and Muntjac I would assume around the same? maybe a bit less?
Sika probably £700, Red Stags probably about £1000
.
Skull processing I'm unsure I think there's a few trade members on here that offer it

One of my friends had a skull done by Gary Knight, believe it was £75 cleaned, bleached and mounted. That was for a decent sized fallow
