Hi all,

looking at building a freestanding high seat/tower on one of my permissions.

oes anyone have any ideas where to get some long poles/telegraph poles. Also looking at my design at the moment .. any tips or photos of your towers/freestanding seats would be useful! Based in Perthshire.

TIA

Tom

Peeled larch poles will last longer than most of us, and don’t need treating with whatever they use on the BT poles (if you cannot find any redundant poles to repurpose, that is). Depending on the size of the top compartment, you may also add some height by fitting suitably cut pole tops into “Elevator brackets” which can add the height of the top box securely over and above (see what he did there?) that of your poles.

I used to work for BT Openreach, there is a reason they get replaced, they are rotten or damaged.
Just a warning they might not last as long as you hope.
If I had to choose it would be the damaged ones, often caused by hedge trimmers or clipped by passing vehicles.

Cheers
Richard

Lawson trees some larch lap and some 4x2 a relatively cheap project.

Usually fencing suppliers or proper timber merchants ( not ur building type) should have some.

The problem u have with them is lifting the bloody thingd vertical and sliding them into the hole u dug.
Without a digger it hard to get them lifted in esp the thicker 1s, leccy poles are impossible by hand.

I see ur in Perth, try Ian Smith from JSF at Tongland, Kirkcudbright, iknow a long way away but in the past im sure they deliver all over Scotland, alway advertise in Scottish farmer. Think they sell a lot of gear nowadays Scotland wide

Dunno if u could use metal crash barriers instead u'd need to concrete them in rather than just pack, the C shape might be better than the W shape and u could bolt extensions on if 1 not high enough.

Most are knackered! Seriously and tge contractors bt use don't sell, them they give them unless you get swindled they don't actually want to drag them to the nearest roadway .
I should actually purchase new tantalised if I was onnit time is too valuable to most of us .

For anyone using larch poles, I'm reliably informed that charring the ends that go into the ground delays them rotting.

Thanks for the tip!

Made a couple towers thirty years ago using 5 larch poles, both are still standing and safe to climb. Sank the poles about 20” into the ground (dry for Scotland, acidic soil).

Just invest in a freestanding high seat such as from Keith’s Seats

Have a few galvanised ones that will outlast me and regardless of the coating have produced numerous animals from them

We not some creosoted strainer posts from a place in Pitlochry. About 3m long but they might do longer ones. Pm me if you want me to find out where. Dave
