Tenterfield fox call (or not)

Hi. A fellow keeper mate of mine has a fox call that really works. The sound sends shivers down your spine. It is blood marvelous. It will get the foxes flying in from near and far. Well thats fine for him, but I did not want to be outdone by him, so to get on par, I bought the best. A Tenterfield. Not a similar one, or a copy, or a clone, but a genuine Tenterfield.

On the internet I had seen it being used in Australia, and I carefully studied the video on how to use it. On the video I particularly liked the sound, the "rasp" in the tone of that call. Well, I can report that I have had mine for over two years now. How many foxes has it accounted for ? NONE. I have never been able to get the damn thing to work. I have blown through it. I have blown over it. I have blown under it. I cannot get anything out of it. Not one squeak has it uttered. Nothing. I can blow through it this way or that, that way or this, upside down or sideways, but the bloody thing is mute.

Has anyone got one to make a noise, or is it all just an Australian wind up !

Same here, I have 3 or 4 of them all brought while in Australia, I’ve watched the video that came with them which made it look so easy, the chap even had his Grandkids blowing them. I can get half a raspy squeak out of a plastic one but never had the confidence to try it in anger. I can only sympathise with you

I've used one with some success but it takes a bit of time to master, impossible to describe without sounding like an old lech, but basically you have to use your tongue to direct the airflow to get the 'squealing' sound

Same as the old round discs with a hole in the middle never ever got a fox to come in the hand works best for me

I have both a shop bought one also a home made one, the best sound is from my home made one. Easy to use the middle of your tongue needs to be inline with the bigger hole as they don't work if upside down!
People who I know gave up too easy, no wind instrument works well until you master the way the air goes in.

Also people forget a fox could be a long way off and they take time to get there so people give a few blasts see nothing and move on....waiting is the key.

I've not used one but it looks similar to shepherds/sheepdog whistle which I have used. The trick is in position of tongue, curled backwards towards roof of mouth. No need to blow too hard, in fact that's counter productive. It really is case of exhaling & moving tongue & top lip into different positions until a sound is achieved.



Of course, it could be nothing at all like a shepherds whistle & I'm being useless again!!

I have similar but could never get it to work. A friend informed me that it would never work as I have an overbite,!
Mine was a gold plated one ? Fox whistle.

Really gents it’s not that hard , not sucking eggs but the bigger side is on the top larger hole to roof of mouth , place your tounge over the hole and blow not hard just a steady flow till you get used to it , and with a bit of practice

foxes will be coming from the next county

Sack it off, like I did, and buy the faulhaber fox whistle from best fox call, it's pulled in foxes from 400yrds away. It's a tiny little sound but brilliant.

Used mine a bit with fair results. I found that I had to pinch both sides (thumb and index finger) and really put it in my gob, rested on my tongue to get a real harsh good sound.

Biggest problem is - with sticks in my left hand, once you have called, shot and picked one I didn’t want to put my fingers back in my mouth.

High pitch mouse call I found worked really well, especially on the edge of a wood.

Took a while before I realised the supplied lanyard is actually there to stop you swallowing the sodding thing!

I tried with mine for about a month then gave it up. It sounded like a fart n the misses said I could do better after eating sprouts

I think I burst a lung trying to get mine to make a sound but eventually I got there. That said, I haven’t tried it in the field yet but shall give it a go next time I’m out.
