The current situation on 17HMR ammunition

I just cannot believe folks will still buy hmr , glad I sold mine at the exact right time . It just doesn't do enough over the 22 lr , far better off with 22 or 17 hornet and handloads
Ammo prices , split cases and then cost increases, availability on the shelf . My cz 452 varmint was a very good shooter but it never really gave me enough extra of anything

I had the reverse experience, I sold my 22 as compared to the 17 HMR it had a big loopy trajectory. I have fired hundreds of 17 HMR rounds out of my Arnie with no split cases and regularly shoot rabbits beyond 100 yds, they are very wind sensitive but still a great caliber

Both 22 and 17 are pretty similar In windage , trajectory is the easiest variable to master . At something like 140-160 hmr ammo of various types started failing to expand in a rabbits chest , similar with crows ( various ammo ) short range I had some terrible premature explosive fragmentation . I was culling hares then protecting new planted hedge , leading to some horrid wounds at shorter range . Basically it was like find the perfect range . I never have had this with 22lr if you hit em accurate they are dead ! When we had lots of rabbits ( vhd played its hand ) I was shooting rabbits from real close to over 200 in good numbers , I got a couple smalker no more that I mis ranged with the hornet due to the ( these are small those are far away error ) and those simply popped so carcass wasted but still humane
Anyhow just saying , if your having hmr issues try something small cf and don't forget cast lead and handloads if ammo costs are a concern

I mean, each to their own and all that, but if pushed I would probably keep my HMR over my .22 - more reach, more accurate, more energy, less bouncy. Any legit rimfire quarry much beyond 100 yards, I'd just get closer or use the .222 anyway. And apart from nervy corvids, the first option is usually always the more sensible (certainly for things you might eat).

That being said, I rarely see a rabbit these days. If things were as they were a couple of decades ago, I'd probably rage at the price of HMR ammunition and speak up more for the humble .22lr with mod and subs! I do hope the bunnies bounce back one day soon (pun half intended).

I recently went to hmr after years of unfairly criticising it.
I have to say I have had to eat my words!
I have shot more vermin with it than I can with a 22.
So much so I have sold the 22 and got a second hmr. One for night duty and a light shorter for day.

As much as I love my 22lr I would take the hmr out of the cabinet 95% of the time unless I specifically need sub sonic noise levels. The hmr hits so much harder than the 22lr and the ability to put impacts on target accurately past 150 yards is priceless.
