The hunt.

If you might be looking for some interesting viewing then take a look at the recent BBC Alba programme called sulaisgeir The Hunt. It is all subtitled and makes for very interesting viewing not just for those interested in life out here in the wild west but also for anyone with an interest in rural traditions and our hunting traditions. It is available on the iplayer.

Cheers - will give it a look. Having spent a good few years 'hanging around' Scottish crags with modern kit the idea of hunting guga on those old hemp ropes still raises the hair on the back of my neck!

The idea of eating them raises the hair on my neck! I believe the folks of the Ness area travelled to make some first climbs of Scottish sea stacks long before climbing was really a sport. The whole programme is interesting on a whole lot of levels.

The programme is being repeated tonight(Thursday) at 10 p.m. The second part is on BBC Alba twice next week.

Absolutely. It should be completely foreign (I had no clue) but as you watch it - the seamless teamwork, the quiet calm 'getting on with it', the years of hunting tradition - somehow it isn't.

Many thanks for linking that.

Glad you enjoyed it. Anyone who hasn't given it a look will find it an interesting way to spend a little time especially when you reflect on the bigger issues addressed.

Really interesting. Very relevant to me as I used to live on a small offshore island, where seabirds were caught using poles on the cliffs, but for ringing and releasing rather than eating.
Thanks for sharing.
