Some members will remember my posting about the sad loss of Alan Evans, aka @Alantoo of this forum back in January 2023. Alan was a master blacksmith, an artisan craftsman of the highest standard well known and respected throughout the Blacksmithing world and an accomplished deer stalker and significant contributor to this forum.

Through the hard work of his widow Lesley and many of his closest blacksmith friends an exhibition of Alan's work is shortly to open in Stroud at the Museum in the Park, Stroud, 6 September – 2 November 2025, supported by a grant from Arts Council England.

The Museum has just put the information on its website; the exhibits are to be changed every 2-3 weeks - https://museuminthepark.org.uk/earth-fire-iron-alan-evans-and-the-new-iron-age

The exhibition is about Alan but goes beyond Alan , because it tells a story of his unique background growing up on Whiteway, explores some of the influences on Alan's creative life, and explore how his ethics, values and interests (such a mentoring young people) can inspire a future for young makers today. So there is a focus throughout on YOUNG people. The money we have raised for the prizes for young artist-blacksmiths under 30 include one to Cameron Pearson who has just won Designer of the Year Award 2025 - that is amazing!! The first time ever an artist-blacksmith has won this Award.

Importantly, a book has also been written commemorating Alan's life and achievements, not unsurprisingly also entitled: Earth Fire Iron: Alan Evans and the New Iron Age

A better teaser, Alan’s entrance gates and cattle grid, and a better view of some of those garden ornaments 🤗

Ingenious and elegant - love the drop bolts on the side of each gate, presumably to let them swing open for wider vehicles - and Alan clearly had a great imagination when it came to creating those garden ornaments.

It is good to see the exhibition now features on the BBC website: Exhibition celebrates life of artist blacksmith Alan Evans

Indeed - scared me witless driving through the unopened gates in my old FL2 with millimetres to spare when I first visited Alan. Thankfully, the Discovery Sport seems narrower - or maybe, I just become a little too confident

Thanks for that link :thumb:

I noticed those too. Very neat.
All cattle grids have to have an opening gate to one side, to allow for passage of pedestrians, horses (and livestock) and anything else that can't safely cross the grid. The way Alan has done it - such that it also enables wider vehicles to pass - is very ingenious.

I went to the opening of the exhibition last night - brilliant introduction and contextual speech by the Chair of the Arts Council after the local civic dignitary’s speech.

Some advice for anyone going:
  • The Museum in the Park is in Stratford Park in Stroud by the big leisure centre
  • There are only 2 disabled parking slots by the actual museum and most will have to walk a little way to the park’s old “grand house”
  • The car park is in 3 sections - park in the middle one if space
  • Go down a path under a black and gold overhead sign saying Stratford park
  • Go past the bowling green on the Right and the tennis courts
  • Just past the small play park of the Left go downhill in the 2 o’clock direction
  • By some stunning sequoia trees hang a left and the House is about 100m down on your Left
  • The entrance is through the courtyard
There are 3 of Alan’s work in that courtyard, including by the actual entrance one of 3 magnificent sets of pedestrian gates in the exhibition. As you go in, the exhibition gallery is to your Left up some steps. To the right of the entrance, through the gift shop, is the Secret Garden where a number of Alan’s larger pieces have been installed in garden and paddock, including his cantilever bench (the matching table is at Lesley’s cottage) and the 2 other gates, pictures below.

It’s not a particularly large exhibition but is does showcase the artist blacksmith’s extraordinary skills.

Enjoy

I was planning on going up today, but the weather is not looking terribly nice up in Stroud. I'm sat staring at the bike, then the clouds, then back at the bike trying to decide if I want to risk the rain or not.

This has blown my mind to see. A friend of mine is exhibiting there, so I was planning on going, totally unawares of the SD link! What an amazing legacy.

Talent aplenty.

Love the grid/side rails installation.
Can someone expand on the cropped SS handle/pin on either side?

View attachment 436806
John, the pin has 2 positional holes in the stone pivot block - the closed position as seen above and one where when the handle is lifted, the gate swung through 90 degrees to create a wider opening (and to allow dogs to walk by the cattle grid). As Tim says above, very clever design and beautifully executed.
