THE PRETEND KEEPER

Work has started, I’ve doubled the size of one of my pens ( Gordon’s ) added another 120 meters of fencing, few of the lads turned up to help put it up, now I’ve just got to make the bob holes, a gate and straighten some of the wire out, so that’s my evenings buggered for the next week 🙄IMG_0313.webp367bb997-544b-419c-a1fe-208441bd3675.webpa122caf1-e386-442b-af93-796e96501ef2.webpIMG_0323.webp

Set up on barley stubble this morning 4.30 am waiting for the corvids to arrive. Not as many about as I'd hoped but still trimming a few carrions and 2 bonus magpies makes it all worth while.

Bit of a tip that may help some

Some of the springs on the pheasant feeders can get a bit bent or badger bothered allowing too much corn to spill out
Get a bike inner tube and sleeve the spring up to the feeder bottom - spring moves less and less corn is wasted

Just been offered a keepers job on 20,000 bird low land shoot, half the birds are in and the keeper has walked away 🤔

Thats a big job mate
Gone from being able to do it to HAVING to do it
Would you have an underkeeper or two ? - Poults / or birds from day olds ?

Poults. One lad that works between the farm and the shoot, it’s still just a private syndicate for rich farmers, easy ish to look after because it’s all just farm land and cover crops, they’ve got someone to do it for this season but he’s not what they want, they want someone who can do the maintenance around the shoot and repair vehicles etc, I said I’ll give them a hand where I can and we’ll see what next season brings

Don't know the place personally but I've been keepering professionally for nigh on 40 years. Shoots that buy in poults find you other things to do with the six months that you're not keepering. I've listened to guys talking - helping with lambing, silaging, corn carting, fencing, fixing machinery -the list is endless.
By all means if you go into it eyes wide open and know what this job entails, then it's the right one for you. Just thought I'd stick my two pennies worth in, I've met a lot of disallusioned guys who had a "keeper" job and came away sadder but wiser.
Having poured cold water on everything,if you go for it then I wish you the best of luck, keep us all posted.
Kind regards
Jess.

Mate of mine trained as keeper. Finished it and was offered a labourer handyman job. When he looks back he said the only reason he training scheme was cheap labour. I was always keen but after hearing this never made the step.

What a rock and roll life I lead, Saturday evening and I’m at home making fox grids for the extended pen, should be 90% finish tomorrow which is just as well because my flying chickens are coming a week today IMG_0366.webp
