THE PRETEND KEEPER

Got another last night - thats another 2 this week but as above i shot one last Friday night
Only 70 yards - thump thought down it went - looked and looked but could not find anything - then after 30 mins i found blood and a large chunk of liver !
Could still not find the fox as its all clearfell regen
Got home and reviewed the recording and to see the strike - the fact it rolls the fox over who then drops - well it just makes it incredible that it still made off - Adrenalin !
It happens. I guarantee you it's in a deep dirt nap now.

I remember shooting a fox one night and it running off , couldn't find it so back in the morning with my Patterdale bitch and she had found it before I was anywhere near.

Another night I shot a fox , heard the thump and down it went in some rushes. I searched and searched and couldn't find it so back in the morning and I had literally been stepping over it.

Have you not got access to a dog Stav ? Someone with a terrier will soon find it.
So, I’ve looked for it today, firstly on my own then with a lad with his 2 dogs, I found blood at the shot site and on the gorse it crashed through, the lad said his dogs would find it but no, they showed a lot of interest in an old earth that was about 80 yards away but there was no evidence outside the earth, he said it’s in there but who knows, I’ve watched the video about 30 times and I was 100% happy with the shot and the way it drops, so who knows what went wrong, as soon as I get her indoors to get the video off the SD and onto my phone I’ll send it to you and see what you make of it

So this morning I was lucky enough to meet up with a very nice chap off here and got to bore the life out of him showing him around my shoot and trying to make it sound like I know what I was talking about, it was a really nice way to spend an hour, having someone to rattle on to about shooting and keepering without hearing them words “ SHUT UP STAV “ so it’s been a lovely day, gifted a nice bottle of wine from the lad and a lettuce from the old girl at the shoot 😂 the only dampener on the day was not finding the fox from last night, but these things happen sometimes I suppose ☹️
Oh yeah, I’ve got some young’uns in the crops too 👍IMG_7399.webpIMG_7400.webpIMG_7401.webpIMG_7403.webp

Yep its probably gone to ground. Had that happen 1 night as well , shot a fox which ran off and we followed the blood trail to an earth.
So went home and got terrier and we dug it 11pm at night 😁

Yeah, I would of done that in the past, but life’s too short for sweating my cobs out on such a lovely day digging through sandstone

This is catching on.
Shot a fox last night only about 40yards, it got wholloped good and trotted off to a thick hedge.
Be dead in a min that I said to myself.
45 minutes later at 2:29 bloody am I found it!
I had watched the sun go down and now the bloody sun was coming back up!

That's a long one.

Fingers crossed good year for wild ones, I've seen 4 broods this week - that's 4 more than I saw last year!! 😆

Yeah, seen my first lot over the back side of the piggeries, hopefully I’ll see a few more over the coming months and a few will make it through the summer

Probably 3 years. A wood with a lot of pine in so was dark and no bottom to it. We finally got some bramble and other cover growing in the pen with sunlight coming in. Was previously just ferns which birds knocked back. Will see how well it improves this year fingers crossed.

Out up at the shoot this evening with a good mate for a half hearted stalk, we did quite a bit more talking than stalking but I haven’t seen him for a bit and we had a lot to catch up on, it was a lovely way to spend a couple of hours, we did walk into a couple of roe in the beast field next to the farm but they turned out to be two doe’s, sometimes it’s just nice to have a place like this to yourself and to just watch 👍

How is the LongOne??

I was out last night. Vixen cub @ 185yds about 22:15 not quite dark, cub out on its own. I heard a rabbit squeal in field behind me (I wondered if it was a FoxPro but nobody else shoots foxes around here!) Anyway cub must have heard it too as popped out of hedge 200yds opposite me. Very cautiously, in & out of hedge but stopped long enough to send 32grn her way.
Spent next 2hrs using foxpro but nothing showed any interest. I know there's vixen with just 2, 1 as of tonight cubs (now just the one mouth to feed!) frequently here but not tonight.

Heading back to yard, 2nd to last field & see heat through spotter. I know its badger but still put rifle up just to look...20yds behind brock, out pops a fox. This one's on a mission, crosses field, moving between cattle, and quickly reaches far side of field, about to disappear through hedge until I shouted "fox!" and he stopped @ 179yds just long enough for a trigger squeeze.
