THE PRETEND KEEPER

Up again last night and as always they are starting to take over my life, even if I always say they won’t before they arrive, checked Gordon’s pen first and they are hammering the feed ( as you would expect from 500 hungry flying chickens) still a few outside the wire but they are hanging around and have no problem getting off the ground and even flying a short distance back into the pen, I next went to forestry pen, again, quite a few outside the pen at the back but as I walked around the pen they were all heading back in to meet up with the good girls and boys who had stayed in the pen, after feeding I headed to the farm, grabbed the .243 from the van and gave it a couple of hours on fox patrol. Didn’t see any foxes ( I never know if this is a good thing or not 😬😂) but the amount of deer was crazy, especially for somewhere that is apparently managed by the forestry terminators, I had a lovely encounter with a fallow prickett that was with a doe, he was a very dark, thick set animal that appeared to be blind in one eye, they both came within 35 yards of me and were fully aware of my presence but showed no concern, I’ll maybe take one once I have the time to deal with it 👍
Oh yeah, and I was over the far side checking the fields, hoping they had all been cut, looks like the farm hand is in for a kicking, it would seem he’s got carried away with the fert, perfect straight line of laid wheat, looking at it I don’t even think putting the lifters on will make any difference with this😬IMG_7952.webpIMG_7953.webpIMG_7955.webpIMG_7956.webpIMG_7957.webp

I stood and waited for my fox again tonight but it never showed so set to on the rats in the farm yard. 12 with the 1022! That was fun.
Thermal makes ratting easy!

me too - one of lads got one last night but saw another
Lots of grass cut today for hay - but nothing !

Think I'm upto 27 Charlie's this year.
Not many I know but what's others tally so far?
If you want to say that is of course.

Had a good year and as confirmation absolutely no sign of cubs so I must be doing something right!
Out this a.m. pre-dawn but nada - two consolations though - rain held off until I was just home and this…..

Been many a year since I've seen wooden game crates, bloody nightmare things to clean 😡 the power washer lifts splinters out of them plus wet straw sticks to the slats, don't collapse to stack away.
Fortunately for you, not your problem 🤣 best of luck with your birds, you might even get a blink of warm dry weather to settle them in.

Now that’s interesting. I have been on a few workdays on our shoot including when the birds arrived. 3000. In wooden crates. Not seen before and asked the guy delivering why. He said they don’t heat up as much as plastic when the birds are being transported 🤷‍♂️

Truly don't know if that's true, could well be. Plastic Mondial crates are fairly universally used these days. I crate birds as late as possible in the evening, fewer poults per crate than most,on trailer then out to pens for 0400 next morning,as soon as it's light enough to see without falling over 😂
After rearing is done, they come apart for hot power wash, along with sheds and netting sections. That's how I know that splinters come out of the slats😭

Panic last night as arriving near the shoot spotted probably 30 birds 300 yards from pen.
Problem was it was half an hour before dark. Managed to walk them back to pen.
But very strange they were pushed this far out.
As we were returning to truck my mate spots a fox below wood. Quick rush to get rifle and a vixen accounted for.
20230821_202832.webp2 hours later below other pen and a 3/4 grown cub was next. The birds are certainly drawing them in

Well, they are starting to worry me now, they will of been in a week tomorrow and they are staying in and around the pen, the seem happy sitting in the sun and dusting themselves under the holly bushesIMG_7979.webp, I’m sure they are lulling me into a false sense of security and are about to go mental at any moment, last season they were in 2 days and were all over the place and I spent a week chasing them back to the pen, like badly behaved children, anyway, for now I’m happy because they seem happy
I bagged myself a large jasper that was sitting watching the beast in the shed
I’ve also invested in a new scope for the .223, let’s see if my small brain can cope with this new technology 🤔😬IMG_7981.webpIMG_7978.webpIMG_7977.webpIMG_7976.webp

Well, they seem to like too be outside the pen’s rather than in them now, grubbing about the brackens, I’m not concerned about this as they are not moving far from the pens and by the amount of feed they are getting through they are definitely roosting there, I managed to get round this afternoon without a drop of rain landing on me, more by luck than good judgement, I stopped off over the far side and the rain over Helmsley was wild, just as I got in the van it started at the farm, one thing I have noticed riding around the cut fields is the lack of wildies and last years birds, hopefully a few will start to show over the next few weeks, they quite often can top a slack drive up, especially the ones around the boundaries IMG_7987.webpIMG_7993.webpIMG_7991.webp

You can always rely on next doors mate! mi casa es su casa!!
😁
I haven’t even seen any of his yet, which is odd because they are normally all over the bottom of the field at the back of the farm and he’s trying to get them off it, god, I’ve missed telling him “ I’ll tie him in a knot” if I catch him on there 🤣

What mounts you gone for mate?
Met a lad off here earlier who brought me a scope to try on the .223 with Hawke medium height QR mounts, so I’ve ordered them they look very good value for money at £34, gone are the days when I’m paying 100+ quid, I was going to get some sportsmatch they were a bit wide and wasn’t sure if I’d get the ir where I want it
