THE PRETEND KEEPER

I was out foxing last nite and saw this bloke , in the thermal walking across the fields clapping his hand , after blasting my truck horn , we meet , I asked him what the fec was he’s doing, looking for my pheasants , he is the under keeper on a shoot next door , he said there were 400 in the pens , and on feeding today there where 6 , there I did see about 10 hens on my land 600 acres dotted about
But how do you loose that many
I gave Him tea out my flask , and lent him a torch , and he went on his way
I went home not vey happy with wanders in the night
Huh, I think it was an alien encounter Dave, you've not been probed at all I hope....!

Something has gone wrong there, my guess is they have found better conditions somewhere else to give them what they want, he should have a thermal with him if he’s looking for birds in the dark

Well, I had the royal visit from the shoot captain this morning, so I gave him the guided tour, he was pleasantly surprised by what he seen in the drives, he’s asked me to try and feed a few into another small drive, not really what I would do because if you feed this area they tend to go over the boundary, anyway, I’ll have a think about that. We also put a big box of chaff out over the far side of my piggeries drive, this is a good area to pull birds in from the surrounding areas 🤞👍IMG_0854.webp

You know what the fec your on with, why walk the fields , with no thermal and not torch , you would think he would walk in the day ,, do pheasants have glow in the dark wings and eyes or am I missing something?😉

they tend to go over the boundary,
I use to shoot a forest that neighboured the estate next door.
They fashioned a drive that actively drove their birds onto me.
We would wait until their morning was finished and then in the afternoon go and have a few flushed birds courtesy of the neighbours.

I wouldn't of done it but the gamekeeper was a complete miserable bastard to me for reasons I won't go into here. Let's just say that poetic justice can taste so sweet at times ☺️.

The other neighboring shoot the old chap was an absolute gent and we got on great. I would dog his birds back and he was often great full.
I would phone him to let him know stuff he should know etc.
The other idiot lost out, in a big way lol 😆.

I’m not quite sure what he thinks he’s achieving walking across a dark field clapping his hands, if they are out on the field in the dark he’s got more problems than wandering birds 😂 maybe it’s some modern day keepering tactics we don’t know about

The deer, the bloody deer, are at my feeders on the side of a hill. Feckrs time their arrival to just after it gets too dark for a shot. So I rigged up a couple of alarm mines, 12 bore blank rigged up to a tripwire today. I forgot to put a cover over one as the rain does seem to affect them. At 530 I was on one ride remedying my neglect and spotted a marvellous 8 pointer Sika stag eyeing me from amongst some trees.
I suppose ten years ago this would have had me scuttling back to get my rifle. I didn’t. I finished my work and reversed out and drove to where I could watch him. I watched him for 5 minutes in the pouring rain chasing two hinds around above the game crop.
Maybe tomorrow my heart will have hardened. Especially if they’ve missed the trip wires.

Earlier in the year I was having a big problem with fallow deer on the cover crops. A fellow keeper said tie up some strips of material and drench them with perfume, and it had to be lady's perfume. I did wonder if he was having a joke with me, but it appeared to work.
I have now started having problems with these fallow (giant rats in my eyes) knocking off the big quill top hats of my feeders. I have been stapling more perfumed soaked cloth inside the lid and again it appears to be working. I'm not sure how often I will to refresh the cloth, but the first ones have been working for three weeks. Next experiment is the stick on toilet freshners as they hopefully wont be affected by the rain.
Top tip, tell the missus what you're doing with the perfume, and don't go to your local garage or any garage for that matter after applying half a bottle of estee lauder.

Nightmare feeding today, got the quad out went to the far side first, stopped it went and filled the feeders, came back, quad wouldn’t start off the button 🤔 went with the pull cord but wouldn’t rev up and started backfiring, so walked back to the farm to get the loadall, no one at the farm 🤬 walked back to the quad and pushed the bloody thing back to the farm 🥵 finished off my rounds in the van and carrying bags of wheat through the forestry 🤬 so fixing the quad is another thing to add to my list of jobs, I’m not happy IMG_0896.webp

Might just of flooded somehow.
I’ve had a quick look at it and the battery is knackered, I’ve had this before with a Honda quad, if the battery is totally shot when you start them with the kick or the cord it misses and puts petrol into the exhaust and pops, hopefully it’s just the battery and not the reg or the gen ☹️
