Titanic Resting Place & Gravesite Ruling

Seems a judge in Virginia has deemed it acceptable to cut into the titanic wreck to acquire the telegraph machine!

In the past it has been ruled that the site is to treated as a grave site for those who perished in the maritime accident, quite rightly so too! Interestingly where does the legality sit? The ship I believe was registered as a British ship yet American tycoon, John Pierpont (J.P.) Morgan, whose company was the controlling trust and retained ownership of the White Star Line.

Is the world now in a time where less respect is given to such locations?? Surely this ruling will lead to others taking parts of the ship without legal condoning...granted you'll need specialist kit to get down there so it's unlikely to be masses of relic collectors.

Like with Howard Carters King Tut escapade, should there be a statute of limitations on graves?

All parts of history should be available for future generations to witness,
When I had a SA guest over he wanted to visit The Imperial War Museum.....

The last two parts we visited was the WW1 exhibition also the death camp exhibition which Johan only lasted 15 mins in then wanted to go outside the building. We went back in but not to that part.

I enjoy museums (not sure when I will go to the next one) Chelmsford museum local to me is very well represented.

It's interesting isn't it that the USS Arizona which is at the bottom of Pearl Harbour is a registered grave site as it still contains the remains of about 1,100 US Navy personnel. Imagine the uproar if the same action was applied for in that case. I would hazard a guess that it would never be granted.

A US national owned the ship? Salvage maybe being used as an excuse. I cannot imagine the point after 108 years of it being soaked in salt water.

Everything from the Titanic is worth a fortune - mind - bogglingly expensive so the telegraph, in the 'stop' or 'go astern' position would be worth well over a million and probably a few..
Money sadly drives the Americans as does fame.
I agree that it should be respected as an international grave site.
Since rather more perished on Titanic than Arizona, I can see many Americans as outraged as reasonable people will be.
