Steady lads - not those tall assegai-bearing johnnies who gave us such problems at Rourke’s Drift - rather an outing for Roe in Perthshire and Fife…..which for 6 days straight was so damned wet that most of the little rascals stayed in the deep woods…
I had transferred the Zulus V1 to my 6.5x55SE from the .22lr and tested/zeroed it at the range before travelling to Scotland and all was good except one instance when it turned off at the shot - however a further 1/4 turn on the battery cap sorted that as it had done when it was originally on the triple deuce - which by the way now wears the V2.
Anyhoo on the few occasions when Roe where about it performed flawlessly - except in very wet or misty air which defeated the RF and thus the BC - as mentioned on another thread my two stalker pals had the same issue with their top-end gear so not really surprised that the Zulus at about 1/6th of the cost had the same issue.
First shot was a miss - so used to the previous .222 trigger that I forgot to “set” the set trigger on the 6.5 and snatched the shot - fortunately no harm done - a clean miss; as was the spooked fox a few seconds later! An observation - the focus is very fine so getting on a moving beast and focussing properly can be a compromise..
Having descended from the SD naughty step we later managed to get in range to a buck and doe - on a much brighter day i.e. less rain and marginally clearer air. I was impressed with the quality of the V1 picture….
A further observation - I am so beguiled by watching these creatures that I nearly forgot why I was there…
Next time was back to rain/mist where I discovered the already mentioned RF/BC issue so had to default to holdover at about 220m - pal managed to get a very quick reading before his bins stopped behaving. Considering the conditions and distance I was pleased by the performance - off B&Q’s finest quad sticks…
One of my pals had a hip replacement only 10 days before and was there in a foot up spotting capacity only; strangely he declined the opportunity to go fetch…
Last roe was one of a group which the farmer wanted shot - a classic 350m squelch/stalk across open fields keeping very low to use the low stone walls as a shield, breathtaking stuff in to about 160 then the rascal disappeared behind the last wall. My only hope was that it was heading for the gate at about 190 but before I got set up it did indeed come through said gate, spotted your hero in mid-faff in the middle of the field and took off away and to my right. A loud bellow stopped it for a second then on it went; a second yell stopped it long enough to get on it and take the shot - bang flop!
Last observation - you can see clearly why a backdrop is essential!
Nice to have the videos of my outings - even the miss…..
