Total Wild Boar numbers

So no one seen or heard of boar RTA's then? if the numbers are as high as some of you suggest I would expect to be seeing as many flat boars as flat roe in these areas, and I doubt that is happening.

You do see casualties from time to time, mainly I see them on the way home in the early hours but a lot of people have slowed down on the roads knowing they run the risk of hitting a pig crossing over the road, I also see a fair amount of cars that have come off the road so not sure if they were involved in trying not to hit a pig. I would suspect that there are numbers of pigs which get bumped but crawl away and die in the woods.

I personally know of four RTAs involving boar in the last 6 or 7 months so they are not that rare.

All trichinella tests done by APHA, even if it is a sample taken by a vet at AGHE. They all go off for testing with the results logged, including which county animal was shot in and I have seen the figures.

Do you know the APHA figures for the number of trichinella test presented? This would be very interesting.

Also does anyone know how common TB is within the population? I shot one that I suspected had TB, the ministry vet told me it was quite common in the FOD population and didn't even want a sample as he had had plenty from the area and told me it was ok to eat. He asked me to inform him if I found any more evidence in the future.

Many of you will be aware that the DI maintains a database of RTAs involving deer on behalf of Highways England. Hopefully some of you will have submitted reports through Home We have also been monitoring feral wild boar accidents for some time. Up to March 2015 we had received reports of over 250 RTAs involving feral wild boar. The majority were in the Forest of Dean and surrounding areas but others were in Kent/Sussex and of course the fatal accident which occurred on the M4 in Wiltshire. These are of course only the reported incidents and may be an underestimate of the actual number. We will shortly be updating the figures to include last season and the result will be available on the website.

Hope this helps the discussion.
