Any gearbox specialists on here ?
Experienced a never before seen phenomenon with my L200 (178BHP, manual, 2011)
So it’s well looked after and serviced regularly
Gearbox and Trabsfer box fluids not changed in my ownership, but we’re done prior to my purchase “some time ago”
Never had any issue with either
Clutch pack changed last year and done several long runs at motorway speeds
Yesterday, did a 400 mile round trip towing a twin axle horse trailer (laden on return journey)
On way down near destination, stopped for a brew and to top up fuel as did nit want to stop on way back with previous cargo on board
Noticed that the trabsfer case was dripping from lowest point - looked underneath and oil was coming down from somewhere near the top of the case in the area of the gear selector housing
No obvious cracks and certainly no leak from driveshaft seals
Some distribution of oil on drivetrain to rear - from wind but certainly not wet and not enough to cause me to abort the mission
Anyway - return journey carried out without incident at towing speed and under significant extra weight
Truck towed without issue and returns the usual 28 mpg laden
Got home and had further investigation - definitely no cracks to the casing of TF box, no loose bolts on any of the casing joints
Oil def weeping or had weeped from the upper area of the shift levers
Investigated from above inside the cab and noted some oil around the upper shift lever block once the gaiters ns seal was removed
There is a seal on the High / Low lever that also has a breather tube from the case linked to it
I noticed this seal was loose, possibly since the clutch was done but as that was over six months ago I wonder if yesterdays excersions caused some raising of pressure or oil in the case causing it to vent out if the shift stoick seal
Today I’ve dropped the remaining oil (1.9 LTS) and replaced with 2.4 ltr to overflow)
Factory spec is 2.5 LTS capacity so this suggests I lost .5 ltr yesterday
Anyone experienced this issue before or can comment on wether it would be possible for the oil to weep out of this seal (the one at the highest point of the trabsfer case on the high low range shift lever) under normal circumstances ,,,?
