UK Blades forum

Morning guys
I have been knifemaking now for about six months and after the wounds had healed (no on told me it was safer to wear gloves) I decided I would like to join the UK Blades forum so I didn't kill myself.
I'm having a problem getting through their verification system or e mailing them. Is anyone, or does know a member on there that is, or could contact an administrator to sort me out.

Hello Skull, to be honest there are lots of us knife makers on here that could possibly help you out with whatever your problems,questions may be. I have been friends with "Whitetiger" and the chaps at Emberleaf for a while now and I am always surprised at the generosity of them regarding advise.

I was one of the stalkers that helped sandy develop the hunter gatherer and tested the first one in the field ,it’s a cracker ,I have asked sandy to make me one in stainless so at the moment he is sorting out his heat treat process ,he is a perfectionist so its not going to happen overnight but when it dose happen it will be right

I subscribe to Sandys channel. Got a lot of time for his work, its perfection. I wish I had that much patience. My main problem is using the belt grinder to grind bevels. They're well wavy with 2" bump, even with a jig. Pulling my hair out and resorted to hand filing.

+1 for jacklores "The hunter Gatherer" is a well thought out Blade made from scratch by a very skilled craftsman very sought after ,Jacklore knives can be found all around the world

Ben Orford, Exmoor Blades, Outdoor55, and Alec Steele are great knife making resources. Of those, Ben is probably the best at describing safety both in the making and use of sharps of all shapes.

its worth joining the Edge matters forum im a member along with loads of great uk makers. its really useful although i have been making knives for 10 years its still really handy to talk to the guys on there. if you want any advice skully give me a shout it takes a while to settle in to your own style

Just found this old thread on Google, are you all professional knife makers now! I really want to have a go and set up a little workshop in my garage. I was looking at the Vevor grinders on eBay, seem very cheap compared to others, obviously get what you pay for but don’t fancy spending 1-2k on one. Has anyone seen or know of those machines. What else is a must or good to start with as well. Just watched that video about the Hunter gatherer knife, looks awesome

Mate, having gone through this myself, I will tell you how to save money in the long run. Buy the best up front. Even if you cant justify the cost, you will be better off in the long run. I started with a bench grinder modified to take 2x48" belts. From there I upgraded to a 2x48" bench grinder. It gave me variable speed and flips over sideways as well. Those features make a massive difference to what I can do with the grinder. In the last 6 or so weeks, I added a 2x72" grinder. That gives me more functionality again. I mostly use the 72" grinder with a 10" wheel, and still use the 48" grinder for a lot of other tasks.

Looking back, I would have been better off putting my money straight into good equipment than wasting it on cheap equipment that didnt really help me achieve what I wanted. Also, if you can go do a class with a good knife maker, you will really find that is an eye opening experience. Not only will it jump start your knife making ability, it will show you what gear they have and how to use it.

Hi, appreciate that cheers. I unfortunately just bought a cheap grinder chap said it takes the 2x72 belts but it doesn’t! It’s the Vevor one from eBay and looking at new ones they all say 2 x 82” so first mistake there already I’m definitely up for going on a knife making day and looking at the best book to buy etc. hopefully it will all fall into place one day

forget it , Uk knifemakers on FB is far more worthwhile . I dont go on much but if your stuck on anything there is a good mix of specialist in most areas .
A side note , Personally i rarely wear gloves ( for odd tasks they are useful if you purchace anti cut) but you must gen up on safe practice though a split second mistake can and does Kill , protect your lungs and your eyes !

As above .. gloves are your worst enemy in a workshop of machine tools. Learn not to touch the shiny bit and you'll be far better off
