Steve Barclay, Secretary of State for the Environment, Food & Rural Affairs has written to BASC and other stakeholders advising of his intention to issue a new general licence for gamebird release on or within 500m of Special Protection Areas (SPAs) in England. It is proposed that the general licence would run for a duration of 12 months. For SPAs where the evidence does not support the use of a general licence, releases on or near these sites would continue to require an individual licence. We are expecting further details by the end of February.

Having worked closely with Defra through political engagement and following our legal challenge, BASC welcomes the announcement of a new general licence GL45 for the release of pheasants and red-legged partridges on or near certain SPAs in England. The new general licence will allow the release of gamebirds on a substantial number of SPAs without individual application.
