I’ve done 3 variations in the last five months upgrading my rifles I’ve had a call Office senior Firerams Office are wanting to come out and see me to ask the reasons why never heard of this before I bought a 243 and it was horrendous the gun shop took it back and give me a refund and I changed my 308 because it was to heavy to a little 18” 308 rifle plus I changed my 223 to a slower twist 223 to shoot 40 vmax. Not sure if I’ve done something wrong any advice would be helpful thank you

Making up their interpretation of the rules as they go along.
You've done everything right, it would appear to me. Your reasons seem reasonable.

My deer stalking rifles was on the budget end when I got started stalking after Xmas when work picked up I decided to upgrade my rifles and equipment because I love deer stalking didn’t think they was a limit on how many times you can do a variation within reason

So their crappy system has come back to bite them, if 1-1 could be done sensibly it would reduce paperwork, makes no sense that they grant you permission for X calibre then charge you to buy the same if traded in. I don't see why this needs a home visit when it could have been cleared up with a phone call

Exactly my point mate it should be like a shotgun if you’ve got it on your certificate you should be able to change it any time you want for the same calibre. It’s understandable if it’s different calibres

That's the nuts bit about UK law

How is it different for different calibres.
Are you any more or less likely to accidentally (or on purpose) kill someone with a 6.5CM Vs. a .270?

It should be along the lines of.
"You want to shoot deer?
You seem sensible, have no convictions
You have somewhere to store them and to shoot em
You have undertaken some training (controversial I know)"

Fine,
have up to X suitable guns

We are so far from a sensible system here
