If you are considering installing a VPN on your android mobile phone, one cost-free option is Orbot from the Guardian Project. You can download from Google Play or GitHub.

This is effectively a proxy system which routes your mobile's data traffic over three anonymising nodes before presenting your traffic to the internet.

The first of the following three screengrabs shows the app's initial page where you start the VPN mode. Once an onion route is built to your preferred country destination [onion glows green] , all apps you have configured to use Orbot as a proxy will route over the route built. You can pick which apps route natively over your mobile provider's data network, and which route over the onion route.

In the example above I chose Iceland as the exit node country for my Brave browser's traffic. Clicking on What is my IP address? | Find my public IP address | IP.me is an easy way to test the routing delivered to the Brave browser by Orbot:

[Iceland has robust personal privacy legislation]

Proceed with caution using Orbot: I now see that there are some tech pros who throw a bit of shade on the GuardianProject team's Orbot coding. Some critics go further than that. Do your own research.

On the plus side, the TorProject team [who have a very good name in terms of tech and committment to privacy] are now developing their own VPN. By the time they release this as "stable", I will be confident that any frailties will have been worked out.

The beta version is available for those who like to bug fix:

Depends what you need a VPN for. If just to enhance privacy, many of the anti-virus vendors now include VPN capability in their software. I have AVG on my phone and that works well. Just remember to turn it off if you are using Android Auto, as it can cause complications.

Many anti-virus vendors also have VPN offerings, but I have not seen a free VPN to go with any free AV suite.

You quote AVG. That website describes their VPN offering as an upgrade. And the dedicated VPN page prices that at £80 p.a. post intro offer.

Some online reviews of VPN performance places other paid offerings higher in the rankings...for less money.
