Wellies v boots

Having just bought a pair of Haix boots for an upcoming African trip, I noted when looking at reviews that many people wear boots for stalking rather than wellies.

I can understand wearing boots and gaiters on the open hill, where being wet and comfortable is the aim, but for farm/forestry margin stalking I've always used wellies as inevitably there are patches of ground where cattle have turned it to foot deep crap.

I know boots and gaiters would help protect ankles better, but the thought of cow sh!t soaking into my socks is a bit too much.

Boots or wellies. It really really depends on the ground, weather and what you are doing. I have both with me and use which is most appropriate. Indeed with boots I have two pairs - a softer Lowa Tibet and much stiffer La Sportiva Karakorum.

Wellies - wet, boggy, muddy not too hard going and not needing support for going up and down steep hills.

And for doing larder work.

Lowas for dryer flatter and longer walks, or if sitting up.

La Sportivas - if ground is steep and / or broken.

Tend to use gaiters as protection and keep water out. If its cold, especIally sub zero, I wear boots.

I could get away with a mid boot or approach shoe for 90% of the ground I shoot on, however wander off the beaten track and then wellies are required. I did buy a new set of boots to use and they’re really comfy but the backs of them are just a little too low and my gaitors ride over the top. One misstep and a soaked boot… I could use my mountain boots but they’re too stiff. I’ll probably end up just using my Skellerup wellies, very comfortable and you know your feet will stay dry. Quick and easy to get on and off too.

I wear wellies and boots dependant on ground to cover and weather conditions. Meindl in summer months and Muck boots - arctic pro for wet sh@tty under foot ground. Never been cold yet, good pair of Norwegian tall boot socks.

Shooting from April - Oct I use boots - good old German para boots!
Nov - march I use wellies - gateway 1 pro shooter
