MI5 operated in Italy during the inter-war period, and helped Benito Mussolini get his start in politics with a £100 weekly wage.

Now as we have MI5 & MI6.
My stupid question is did we ever have MI1, 2, 3, & 4?

MI3 was geographic and MI4 was the topographic service which essentially became either absorbed into part of MI6 or ordnance survey in 1945

I assume there was 1 and 2 as well

I love Google;

  • MI1 (Military Intelligence Section 1): Primarily dealt with the Secretariat, codebreaking, and administration. Synonyms/Sub-sections included MI1b (Interception and Cryptanalysis). It was reorganized into the Government Code and Cypher School.
  • MI2 (Military Intelligence Section 2): Focused on Geographical Information for areas like the Middle/Far East, Scandinavia, and the Americas. These functions were largely absorbed into MI3 or MI6 by 1941–1945.
