What if we all went treehugging?

Very slow day here in Edinburgh for me (as you will clearly see...)

Pondered what would happen if we woke up tomorrow and the antis had won, and all forms of game shooting were banned. Presume all the rural estates would have to start looking at rewilding and carbon credit offset forestry.

But all of that costs £££, whether in government grants or in lost tax revenue from emission dodging firms buying into this new deluge money pit...

So whilst obviously the rural economy will be massively sunk, would the rest of the economy actually manage to stay afloat with that too?

Back out loading on the partridges tomorrow so thankfully daft thoughts like this should cease...

My theory:
Initially they'd be delighted.
In time they'd develop a culture where they had to control certain species as those would threaten their conservation goals/the species they value.
Predators such as lynx, bear and wolves may eventually make that list if reintroduced, how many attack on humans by wolves or bears to establish this would be interesting.
The public may stop Disneyifying nature after a while.
Initially they rewilding anti lot would insist any culling was only what was necessary for their conservation goals. In time there would be a culture of those doing the work being held in esteem.
People need something to worship, such as their rewilding goals, so before you know it a hypocritical hunting culture would develop for the privileged few but potentially based around different species to currently.
Some would find they enjoy it and try to do it more frequently.
A different demographic would be the hunters compared to what we have now, and new traditions would emerge.

This would take under 100 years.

The problems with a planet-wide ban on killing all farmed and wild animals/birds/fish would include a massive food shortage, not only because there'd be no meat and fish, but because animals would profligate to such a degree that crop farming would become untenable over time. So the result of that would be that the human population worldwide would plummet.

Hmm. Worth thinking about.....
