What powder for the 300 win mag ?

Hi i am just about of powder for my 300 wm as the stuff is now so dam expensive the days of getting a few tubs of different powder to see which works best are gone.
on reloader 19 and it did ok not brilliant but ok just wondering if a pattern emerges for a good powder for the 300 win mag so what’s worked best for you in the 300?

I have the variation but not the rifle.
RL19 sounds a bit quick IMO

I was working on the basis that it was a slightly slower powder than my 270 which is RL22, N160 territory

I have some N165 in preparation for above 180gr bullets but N160 would work a charm in the 150-180gr range

I done a load for a friend, 155gn amax with 75gn RL22, CCI standard primer, very nice to shoot, I think it was running at about 2600 fps

Would have no problem losing a few 100 fps in pursuit of a really accurate load thanks
will be on 180 grain

I have tried N160, reloader 19 & 22. But my best results were with Imr 4350 and when that ran out I was getting the same performance with less powder from H4350.

agree that sounds very low for that charge weight and bullet
RL22 is very similar to N160 in burn rate and volume. also tends to produce similar velocities

same load of N160 would be up around the 3000fps mark even with a shorter barrel

I plan on using 180gr plus

Like I say, "I Think", could have been 2900 but as I no longer load for that calibre I've no need to remember

I always got excellent accuracy and good velocities with RL22 and either IMR or Hodgon 4831. I never used bullets under 180 grs in weight though.Unfortunately I haven't used 165's or 150's so I couldn't recommend any powders for those weights.

I always used R22 in the .300 WM (still use it in the .30-'06).

I agree that powder has now got too expensive to have several tubs sitting around.

After I had my .300 rebarreled into 7mm RM, I tried to use up some faster ball powders (414/380 if I remember correctly) but had hang fire issues due to very low powder volumes in the big case.

I'm currently having a 7mm-'08 built and when I decide what powder to feed it I will buy a load of tubs, I'm fed up with prices going up several pounds every time I buy.

I have used R19 with 180gn BT and this has been very good , also H4831sc has very good results with 190smk , I to had different powders about but I think H4831sc has been very consistent and no problem winter or summer .
The R19 was very smooth on the recoil and very accurate , both rounds running 3000fps .

In the past I used H4831 and IMR4831 .

At the present I'm using RL-22 . And have tried RL-19 .

On a side note I first started using RL-22 in the 7mm STW and now I use it in the 243 WIN , 25-06 , 7mm REM MAG , 300 WIN MAG , 300 Weatherby MAG , 338 WIN MAG , 416 Rigby and the 505 Gibbs !

Or N-205 , both Norma are perfect for win mag, just depends on bullet weight.

I use 69 grain of IMR 4831 with 180 Nosler partition speed is 2756.3 fps with clover leaf pattern.

well I just loaded up some rounds with 208gr Amax over N160, N165 and H4831

will see how they get on
hoping for N160 as the best one as I also use it in the 270 also
