What to use to protect and shine oak furniture

A farmer I used to know used a mixture he made himself - he was a beekeeper. He used hard beeswax and proper turpentine, enough of the latter to soften the hard wax for application. His furniture was very well kept and very 'slidy'. The mixture was applied with a cotton cloth but it needed a bit of effort to shine it up - that was his wife's job and like many farmers wives then, she had a good pair of shoulders on her.
