Wanted: What would you buy?

No particular reason apart from the big turrets kind of annoyed me but they were real nice to use, I just found it made the x5i a bit of an ugly duckling 😂. I wonder what the light transmission difference is between the 2🤷I’ve tried to google but with no joy
Have you got a teenagers 20/20 eyes still ? High mag scopes and last light, nae a good combo...
You'll have to compromise on the side of whatever's most important to you.

I’m after the holy grail as usual😂the scope that can do both, I did have a x5i a while back and yea I liked it. I just wondered if the z8 was a better hunting scope that can still be dialed right out to the 1000 and if its ballistic turrets were anywhere as good as the x5i
I have 3 Z8’s they are very good 2 off 2.3-18x56 and a 0.75-6x24 they are excellent, well built and well engineered

I’ve got a atacr 7-35 here,it’s fine for daytime work but I find the nf’s gie naff at last light to be honest but I must say I’ve not looked through the nx8? Just the nxs and atacrs
Are they Jap glass?
Have you considered the Zeiss LRP S5? Similar to the X5i but FFP.

The X5i does perform well at last light, I have compared with z6 & z8 and there was nothing in it! Interestingly the 3.5-18x50 X5i has slightly better LT at 91% compared to the 5-25x56 at 90%.

I have moved a T96 to my walk about rifle as it suits that purpose more for me, so I needed a scope that could go on the 6.5 for deer and the odd longer one. I have been using a Leica Amplus 6 in 3-18x44 flavour, importantly with the L-4W reticule. This is a lovely SFP scope with a crosshair that is neither too thick or too thin. It is not cluttered like those silly christmas tree style rets but just has basic MOA hash markings on the horizontal stadia that subtends correctly at x 18mag which works for me as I am generally only holding for wind at longer distances and would therefore be at max mag for this. It keeps the windage turret capped which I prefer for a deer rifle but the elevation turret is very nice. Good zero stop, easy to set and the glass is really very good. Not quite up to the T96 but nothing is but it is very very good and the scope dimensions are lovely and it is so light. Decent illumination as well with on/off steps inbetween each setting unlike the infernal crap knob on the Schmidt.

Seriously impressed with this scope. It isn't cheap as such but it seems cheap for what it is when I compare it to other scopes I have. It seems like the perfect all round hunting rifle scope for people who will be taking shots from 30-350yds and beyond. Even at such small dimensions, it has 80MOA of travel. Not tried a NV add on with it yet but if that works, (it focuses down to 20yds) then this will be a potential new favourite scope of mine. It might usurp the March compact.

From my experience x5-great optics, narrow field of view
Z8 3.5-28 great image, extra expense of turrets. Bit limited on turret travel for long range, image a step up from x5.
Now have a S&b t96 4-16, feel it’s the best I’ve had on the stalking rifle. Still able to use it at 1k on the range.

As far as Ive been told in the past nearly every single scope out there uses jap glass bar swaro but I’m no sure on that tbh it was just what was said at the time?? The z8 claims to have 93% light compared to the x5i numbers but I doubt if the human eye could tell the difference? I know the z8 is around £400 cheaper than the x5i

I looked at the smit to be fair (I don’t like the pm2 ilium ret switch 😤why do they not have it on the side like everyone else, the t96 looks a good glass but I’m mag power greedy so that’s why it didn’t tickle my fancy 😂

I’m usually a mag whore, I have a S&b 6-36 for my target rifle, but honestly get on well with the 4-16. Some of the newer S&b do put it on the parallex ( is on my 6-36) If you can find a minox zp5 they are also up there.

I have both. I have had them both out at last light and side by side at the same mag and can't see any difference. Both are great scopes.

Most flagship scopes are built in Japan by Light Optical Works.

Delta (Stryker), Nightforce (ATACR), Tract (Toric), Vortex (Razor) are all built there. There are very few 'manufacturers' that still manufacture their own scopes nowadays.

Schmidt & Bender, Swarovski and Zeiss are the only ones I know of, and even Zeiss subcontract out some of the manufacturing of their more affordable scopes. Vortex did manufacture the Razor AMG in house in the US for a spell, but those scopes are rarer than hens teeth!
