You know in the many hundreds/thousands of fences I have crossed wearing Wellington boots I have yet to destroy a pair and if I have I can't remember it you must have real rubbish Wellingtons or a seriously poor fence crossing tequniue I am not having a dig here, just curious on how Wellington boots designed mostly for farmers the best tester of Wellingtons when it comes to destruction you just don't see many wearing very expensive leather stuff and surely they in their occupation must cross many fences daily.

Just destroyed a pair two weeks ago and had thrown away my Le Chameau neoprene wellies last year. Our terrain on the west coast Ireland is very boggy, crossing a fence is not that predictable, christ even the deer misjudge quite often and get strung up. Wellies are great where I live for rough shooting, in the hills they are not great because every step in the high grass is a surprise, rocks or holes... never know what you get. Yes I am overweight and maybe not as agile as years back...

edi I hunt north east of you and the terrain is pretty tough going in places if ever I done in a pair of Wellingtons on a fence it was not enough to put me off wearing them maybe if I wreck myself (very possible) I will rethink my footwear, fences have been however very sore on numerous trousers over the years that's for sure nowadays being longer in the tooth and having knee surgery earlier this year I try to find an easier alternative to fence crossings looking for the nearest gate if one's available or a corner strainer preferably with a tree close by that along with my sticks usually gives me enough support when going over one.

I use three pairs of Meindl's. A pair of Island Pro's that are about 25 yrs old and still going strong, a pair of Borneo's leather-lined that are going on 15 years and a pair of Dovre Extreme's that are around 7 years old. Needless to say I look after them by cleaning and waxing several times a year.

I would recommend Lowa boots. I wear Lowas for my job as a dog handler for the MoD and obviously walk a lot in them. Comfortable out of the box, treated with Renapur and they last for a long time. I get them resolved once a year but for stalking use it won't be that often.
I wear Lowas in Africa and also in the UK when stalking and have no need to look for another make.
Treat them right and they will last and look after your feet.

I have Lowa desert boots which are wearing out after more than five years of heavy use during summer. I have worn them for work and shooting dog walking etc.
Currently my first choice is Altberg a pair of high liability combat and the steel toed peacekeeper. I hardly wear anything else. Most of the time I buy surplus and would not previously paid more than fifty quid for work boots. I would happily pay the £130 to replace them. A bit of Ledergris and they stay waterproof and supple.
