Which harness for a dachshund

Hey guys, I'm thinking about starting my mini dachshund down the blood tracking route (she will never be a stalking dog!). I'm trying to figure out what harness to get for her. I've been looking at the Niggelog follow light (which has lots of recommendations) or a non specialised one called perfect fit (it is Y shaped) - which is cheaper!
She is quite deep chested (neck measurement 28/30cm, girth behind shoulder 42cm).
Any advice greatly appreciated.

We’ve gone down the perfect-fit route with our young spaniel and are very pleased with the product. There is a lot of adjustability with the straps and the harness itself is modular so you can get different size top ‘n bottom sections which helps further getting a good fit for the dog.

Our spaniel is an exceptionally ‘keen’ 11 months old (well they all are) and while his training is going ok, I simply don’t want to take any risks in lambing time. Needless to say walks involve what at times is best described as adopting a water ski-ing position and there have been occasions when I’ve not been concentrating and he’s got to the end of the retractable lead at full pelt and nearly dislocated my shoulder! The perfect-fit is well up to the task and there are no signs of wear and tear. In addition, because the harness fits well it doesn’t cause any rubbing or chafing on the dog, something we’ve had with cheaper harnesses in the past.

I suppose the only thing to bear in mind is this is just a very good harness, it doesn’t offer any sort of protection from the weather, undergrowth or antlers. If you think protection may be required check out www.westandjones.co.uk. I came across them at the Stalking Show and while I have no experience of their products, they did look to be well made with some real thought going into materials and design.

Can I ask the question of what are your dogs going to do at the end of the blood track, in the event of a wounded animal being at the end?

Niggeloh are made to make the owner feel better not the dog. There are good harnesses that don't cost a lot and will last a life time. The harness should only go on the dog when you are going to do a track. Most harnesses have plenty of adjustment to get a good fit.

Thank you, I currently only walk her on a collar and realised the harness should only go on when about to track. Does the harness need to be a specialised tracking harness or would just a Y shaped one (which shouldn't limit movement) be fine? Any particular recommendations?

A harness like this is about a tenner here and will outlast the dog. There's no need for anything fancy for tracking.

Hi,
I don’t know if the op is female, I was guessing off the user name.
Thanks,Ken.
You guess correctly! I think it is really easy to get offended via written stuff, so try to remember that for the most part (hopefully on here) people are trying to be helpful and pose genuine question, although if they keep coming of you...!

Many years ago I acquired a teckle pup for a stalking mate in England. In those days the pup had to be a year old before it could be sent to England. She was from a good hunting line and was a sharp bitch with a bit of attitude. I got her up to a good tracking standard and she was my mates tracking dog for many years. She managed some difficult tracks in her long life.

Thans so much, that a great help. I will check out the Kardog jackets. Which one does your Teckel use? Is it the Sulo?
I’m currently in Cairo so will check when I get back home. The Sulo was the one being sold in the UK by Deer Tracking Services IIRC and mine are not those - I have the 2-colour ones and the orange mesh ones for summer work. Whilst my first Kardog jackets came easily direct from the supplier, the last was challenging and I’m indebted to @Jagare for helping me out 🙌
