Evening … my pickup been walloped in back end by fed ex van …
Truck may not be repairable awaiting engineers report … so
Got me thinking what would I replace with
?
Criteria
Do I need a pick up again ?
2xlabradors and a cocker spaniel
2x teenage boys who will be / getting big
Gone down to 1x car for the family
Don’t do mega off-road lately
Needs to be something can tow my boats

Anything fit the bill but gives better than 29mpg of my auto pick up ?

Not interested in brand names or paying for the badge as truck was a
sangyong Musso (7yr warranty) and couldn’t fault it really

Had 3x Kia before and like the 12 plate sorrento we had yrs ago .. hire car at moment is sportsge awd petrol but worse fuel than my pick up and tad “small “

Looking for real recommendations from folk who been thru similar scenarios

Just gone from an L200 to an older shape Volvo XC60 D5. Randomly with the same rubber on the XC60 has more ground clearance, about the same off road ability and 30% less fuel and allot more comfortable to drive. Boot is big enough to take two dogs and two toddler bikes plus some other odds and ends.

Downside is deer are inside with me, but this can be sorted by using bags and trays. I have a 250 litre decathlon folding game bag that lives under the rear load liner until needed leaving the full boot free. For smaller stuff I have zip close game bags from the same source.

Out allot shooting multiple times a week and with some thinking and careful kit use I don’t miss the L200.

I currently drive a Nissan Pathfinder. Nice drive, 32mpg (measured not based on the onboard computer fiction) comfy leather seats and plenty of room in back for several dogs/deer etc.

The Volvo 2.4 five pot D5 is a stonking engine - powerful and yet reasonably economical - I would have thought a D4 (slightly detuned D5 engine) or D5 XC60/70/90 would fit the bill and probably return 40+mpg if driven sensibly. Dont be put put off by high mileages if it has been serviced properly - I have a D5 V70 currently on almost 260k miles and other than an alternator bearing failing at 99k miles, its only ever needed fluids, filters, and consumables such as tyres and brakes & brake pads..

I am looking at a vehicle as well. Currently have a Terracan which my missus wants. I decided against a pickup for comfort reasons. I now use a heck pack which attaches to the back of the towbar. When I retrieve the deer, it is put in a waterproof decathlon bag which then sits in a plastic box with a lid which is then strapped to the heck pack. No smells or bugs inside the vehicle.
I have attached the pack to the tow bar and stood on it No issues. i am 14 stone.
any large 4x4 is going to to do about 30mpg so you need to downsize or go manual I guess. X3, XC60 that sort of thing.
I have avoided Range Rover much as I like them but too many horror stories. I am short listed down to X5, XC60, or, and this is my fav, an ML350. Damn my small Willie.

If its for a one car family, Perhaps you could choose a reasonable car and get a trailer for those stalking trips. I had a Hyundai ix35 2 litre engine 40 mpg plus (diesel) quiet and capable. You can widen the choice quite a bit with a trailer.

See what a new Ssanyong will set you back a month versus what a used XC60/Disco etc....
It's not like you're doing moon miles (albeit you notice it more with the beating, but that's not all year).
Or, perhaps something like a Skoda Yeti, 4x4 diesel and a trailer.

My xc90 is terrible in fuel 2009 2.4. Sorry for thread hi Jack.

Question for you. New or used? If used, how old? budget?
My Terracan has 100,000 miles on it and just gave me 33mpg on a 350 mile run. However, I was taking it easy, ie 65 on the motorway as I had plenty of time. Normally I get 28mpg. So for an 19 year old bus it is comfortable, cost less than 3k earlier this year and so far, everything does what it should and the oil seems to stay inside the engine.
I am looking to replace it with a maybe 10 to 12 year old motor.

oh and I forgot to mention, when on the bunnies I take one of those small 3x4 trailers. No weight to tow and keeps the car clean. might Work for you. Dog trailer with room for a deer?

Yes the XC90 is a big old lump and heavier on fuel than an XC60 or XC70. But I'd have thought it could probably still better the OP's 29mpg in his auto pickup unless he wears a lead boot on his right foot!

I have 80/20 tyres and it’s short runs. We are get 27 and that’s on the on board clock so will be less.

VW caddy maxi crew van with all weather tryres!

Go just about anywhere, minimum 45mpg, you will get 550-575 miles from a tank of diesel.

Plenty of room for a dog box and a plasterers bath.

My 2004 Terracan had 250,000 kms on it when I passed it to my farmer/compost business neighbour for 1500 euros it needed a new clutch that would have cost 2000 euros to me, I had to get another set of wheels asap to get to my job in Bratislava weekly (see picture parked in Dover) it is now at over 300,000 kms and he is more than happy with it tows well over the legal limit sometimes and is not showing any rust yet as it has a double sided galvanised bodyshell.
