Which motor fits the bill ?

So many choices and all people on here will do is tell you what they've got and recommend it. In reality, there's all sorts of vehicles that would fit the bill, from pickups, big 4X4s, smaller 4X4s, to estate cars, such as perhaps an Audi A6 Allroad.

So just do what I do, make a list of all the requirements you want, make a list of all the vehicles that cover them, eliminate them one by one. Then just go into a showroom, look at something completely different and go "Ooh I like that" and buy it on a whim.

As for new or old, that's a personal choice. An older vehicle will cost more to maintain but with a newer vehicle, there's more up-front cost. But one thing for sure, a car costs whichever way you go.
 
Paul if you like kia and want economy get a 2 crdi sportage.
Off road if needed seats 4/5 in comfort and 46/54mpg town/ motorway.
Just get the right tyres if your more off road than on.
Has lockable diff ,traction control, hill start and all turn offable if required atb
 
You could always submit a claim under mydeiselclaim.com and buy a new Volvo with the compo - apparently. I am resisting applying since I did not buy the car for its emissions so no reason to - maybe I'm unwise if moral about it ?

Had a 2008 3-0 v6 tdi alt auto fantastic car and would tow anything and not know it was. however, when it reached 100,000 mile it deuterated rapidly. if it could go wrong, it did! every alarm and light came on over thew next 10,000 miles and it cost a fortune to keep going. i would never recommend a second-hand one to anyone. oh and regardless of what people say it never got better than 28mpg at any speed.
 
This is getting quite funny. The 2 camps are springing up. New vs Secondhand. I would never buy new. Makes no sense To me however you look at it, cash, hp, contract hire, it all costs. New can go as wrong as second hand and you are tied to dealer servicing and the depreciating asset you have.
Secondhand has its risks, but by looking online at the forums you can see what cars last and what don’t And of course you have to look at the seller, the history. Some people look after motors, some don’t. As they say, buyer beware.
2 examples, mate of mine got a d max on contract hire, 5k upfront and think about £270 a month for 3 years.

I bought a 3 year old Navara, had it for 12 years and it worked out that it cost me £50 a month give or take, plus servicing. I did change the crank bearings as they tended to go bang at 60,000 miles. I sold it with 150,000 miles on the clock to a mechanic because it needed some welding and I just wasn’t interested.
but I do know someone who bought a Toyota surf and it went bang within 2,000 miles. He didn’t do his research Well enough. Apparently it was a well known fault.

Its not the fuel bill that will kill the current crop of pertol / diesel cars , it is the depreciation and taxation if any government follows the phase out plan . Chances are they are all full of lies , smoke and morrors and CO2 cannot be changed much with electric because even if we do build all those New Nuke Power stations we cannot actually afford they have a carbon cost .
 
VW Touran 4Motion with a a 2l diesel engine, perhaps? Would have to be secondhand, I think.

Well I personally have found the opposite. Had a 2015 one since new 35mpg motorway driving easily. Over 100k on the clock and zero issues.

2x teenage boys who will be / getting big
Gone down to 1x car for the family
Don’t do mega off-road lately
Needs to be something can tow my boats

Anything fit the bill but gives better than 29mpg of my auto pick up ?


Not interested in brand names or paying for the badge as truck was a
sangyong Musso (7yr warranty) and couldn’t fault it really

Had 3x Kia before and like the 12 plate sorrento we had yrs ago .. hire car at moment is sportsge awd petrol but worse fuel than my pick up and tad “small “

Looking for real recommendations from folk who been thru similar scenarios

Got a mkii, 16p, 47k on the clock, getting 38mpg cruising 68mph on motorway. Had it up rutted, muddy & granite tracks in the Cairngorms last weekend- no problems. very comfortable for a group of 4large lads to sit in. love this vehicle.

Plenty of room for a dog box and a plasterers bath.

Ive been thinking the same for a while now. If I ever got rid of the Hilux I will do the same van, trailer and quad or van that fits a quad in the back ( even better). Alot lower so not so much lifting and you can hide everything in the van.

In the same boat as my car went bang today.

Over the years I have had the Mondeo estate st, zafira, Mitsi pajero, fiesta, ranger pick ups and many more being used as my dog,shoot, work horse and family car. By far, off road the paj, was the most capable but was a thirsty beast. The ranger the most practical and the fiesta on a night lamping the most fun........only got it stuck once!!

For me a pick up correctly kitted out is the winner. Shelf across the arches caged in for the dogs, family in the front. under the "dog" shelf and at the rear of the tub the bikes, suitcases and everything else goes in. Just have to hose it out after beforehand!!

My biggest issue though is the price of second hand pickups nowadays. 5k buys you a high mileage rot box and it goes up from there!
 
Yes its insane my car 8k 2 years ago now worth around 10 ???
Because we can't build new as every single manufacturer relied on China.
And China is shut due to radical covid lockdown rules.
We are that far behind making new due to parts / chip shortage I came home from work to meet myself getting up for work 🤔.
