So many choices and all people on here will do is tell you what they've got and recommend it. In reality, there's all sorts of vehicles that would fit the bill, from pickups, big 4X4s, smaller 4X4s, to estate cars, such as perhaps an Audi A6 Allroad.
So just do what I do, make a list of all the requirements you want, make a list of all the vehicles that cover them, eliminate them one by one. Then just go into a showroom, look at something completely different and go "Ooh I like that" and buy it on a whim.
As for new or old, that's a personal choice. An older vehicle will cost more to maintain but with a newer vehicle, there's more up-front cost. But one thing for sure, a car costs whichever way you go.
