Which winch?

Good morning all
I'm after advice/reccomendations for an electric winch to he wired into the back of my hilux for loading deer up the ramp. I currently have a hand winch mounted in the back so I've already got the steel bar fitted to fix it to and there's a light in the back too so presumably suitable wiring is already there to connect to? I've recently had back problems so I've no choice but to upgrade ASAP!
Any advice on which to buy would be greatly appreciated. Im hopeless on mechanical/electrical stuff so need to make sure I order the right thing so I can take it to my mechanic and get it installed. Posting some links would be very helpful.

I did think of that too yes good point and loosing stuff is something I'm pretty good at! I just thought it might be less clutter in the back and better for hosing/pressure washing the back out maybe without wires and controls getting wet? Do you find that an issue?

A cheapy off ebay will do you fine for that sort of use.
I'd recommend dyneema winch rope though, much more pleasant to handle and more forgiving to wind on the drum
 
Any of the rhino winches or winchmax of amazon are good bits of kit for the money and easy to mount most are bluetooth as well which is great for loading beasts, if just for deer youll only need a little 3000lbs which is what i have great for loading reds when your solo

Ah but for some unknown reason the lighter weight model of the one I shared the link to, is strangely a lot more money…. So I’d rather have more capacity and spend less than pay more and possibly find myself in a spot of bother. It’s quite amazing just how much friction and resistance a larger lowland red can generate when being dragged through vegetation, a lot more than its actual weight. I’m sure someone with a degree in physics (or a gcse for that matter) could probably provide an equation
Granted, if the OP only wants it for fallow then fine but quality tried and trusted names like superwinch would be worth a few extra pennies of my money than some Amazon tat most likely from China (where they probably all are from anyway but hey).

I’ve had a couple of super winches cheap work and relatively robust. The remotes are pretty annoying don’t work flat batteries and so forth cable is the way to go to operate.
 
Depends what you mean by handwinch?
not one of those little round things with a ratchet found on the front of trailers offering limited mechanical advantage or leverage I hope.
For occasional use how about a Tirfor?
I have the T16 version and its pulled 4x4s off their roofs and back onto their wheels, out of deep mud and even sited static caravans.
Permanently site a suitable anchor against the bulkhead with the rest of the kit in a box.

And later, even if you get stuck driving out of the forest/farm late at night no issue with a ground anchor, front, side or rear pulls all relatively quickly.

Always worth carrying an extension rope as can guarantee you'll be a few metres short at some point 👍

Cheap electric winches are rubbish and the more robust units are OTT for your application. If it must be electric buy a reasonable name with spares back up and don't scrimp on the electrical installation side.
As a side note I previously had a number of big winches, Warn 8274 etc and a friend once measured 500 odd Amps on full load 🤔
Your light wiring will not be up to powering any winch and it will need dedicated cables from an adequate power source.

Thanks for all the replies. Rightly or wrongly I've taken a punt on the Rhino winch with dyneema rope my mechanic is fitting it in a couple of weeks. I'll resurrect the thread at a later date and let you know my thoughts. Thanks again.

Thumbs up for this winch got one in the back of mine to winch fallow in perfect for the job good warranty back up the remote stopped working on mine phoned them and had a new one sent out next day free of charge
