Winchester 23 Super Grade Ejector issue?

Afternoon All,
Does anyone on here have experience with Winchester 23's, specifically the ejection mechanisms?

I bought one off of here and it was working perfectly but after approx. 80 cartridges the right hand ejector stopped working. I tried to see if there was anything obvious but there wasn't. Fast forward to Sunday past and at Braidwood it briefly started to work again but soon stopped. I shot a round of clays with it today and the ejector didn't work once.

Thanks in advance for any information or advice given.

Cheers

I don't know enough about the actual gun that you need help with. But a look at an exploded diagram will tell you if the ejectors work on flat v type springs or on coil springs.

If the latter then if the spring is broken it should be a less painful in cost repair than a leaf spring. This is because local to you there is likely to be a small scale bespoke spring maker for such if a factory made item can't be sourced.

Also You Tube may be your friend of the many American forums. Either dedicated Winchester or general shooting. Before all else try a squirt from an aerosol oil. Maybe the blast of that may clean what I hope is just muck?

From the diagram they seem coil spring operated like the ejectors on a Boss? Coil springs if broken will still give some ejection power unlike broken flat V type springs.

Thank you Enfieldspares, that's very helpful! From the diagram I think it is a coil spring (and it may be broken and that might explain the intermittent operation. I took the forend apart (only so far as it looked really finicky!). The gun is useable as is so I don't need to rush in.

I've just had a look on Midwest Gunworks website and they say they wont accept orders from out with the USA.
Next move will be to let a gunsmith have a look. I believe there's someone down in the Borders that does work on shotguns.

Many thanks for your help, it's much appreciated!

There's a two men in a works unit spring maker near to me in Leicestershire. They made a pair of springs for my French Manufrance Fusil Robust. These also are coil springs that work to self-open the gun in similar fashion to a Holland & Holland 1922 Patent spring tube. I'd guess that there will be similar in your part of the country? They basically need to know the gauge of the wire and the number of turns. They were quite gun friendly as I took the gun in and showed them where the spring had to go and what it was meant to do. If you click on the box with Products and Services - Bespoke Springs - Compression Springs and etc., etc., you will see lots of links to other spring makers

Ah that's getting his ejectors out. The OP's issue is that the spring that powers his right hand ejector doesn't seem to function 100%. Which may be his springs or it may be that the part that trips the ejector spring and releases it to eject the case is no longer working as it should. That is a very very different coloured horse.

Ah that's getting his ejectors out. Useful information to do that. But the OP's issue is either 1) that the spring that powers his right hand ejector doesn't seem to function 100% which may be his springs or 2) it may be that the part that trips the ejector spring and releases said spring and plunger to hit the ejector so it kicks out the case is no longer working as it should. That is a very very different coloured horse.

I picked up on possible burrs. Or debris.

Thanks for the additional information Lads. I think this repair is beyond anything I can tackle (without doing even more damage!).
Without actually knowing what the exact problem is, and nothing obvious standing out, it'll need to be a trip to a gunsmith's!

Thanks for your help,

Hillside
