Winter Fuel Letter

Just got my letter telling me I'm not getting any Winter Fuel Allowance this winter. Labour's "Poll Tax" moment. And we've four more winters until the next General Election.

Oddly enough mine had a handwritten note in blue biro pen at the bottom. It says "If you now can't afford to put the heating on this winter...find a match and light this instead"

It's signed "Yours in solidarity K. Starmer, KCB KC, Prime Minister".

I lit my log fire with my letter, I shall however be spending some of my meagre state pension on some thermal underwear for indoor use only!

Over the years I've been a member of this site, I've noticed a definite "anti" trait among many members towards anyone claiming benefits, and in particular those people claiming benefits who don't need to.
Therefore, I would have expected the change to the winter fuel allowance to have been warmly welcomed (see what I did there?) by the majority of the noisier SD members.
An awful lot of well-to-do pensioners have been in receipt of this benefit when really they did not need it. In fact, it's been considered quite a joke by some, and they just give the money to their grandchildren, donate it to charity, or enjoy an expensive meal out. Should those well-off pensioners have been paid a winter fuel allowance? No, of course not. They had no need of it. From now on, only those in genuine need of support will continue to get help with winter fuel costs, which seems a much more sensible system.

How do they work out if you need it? A tracker thermometer up the arse for a week?
If they have paid taxes their whole life they have had plenty of time to prepare for retirement. That includes paying the fuel bills that they have always paid. If they didn’t prepare then more fool them!

I'm very happy for you my friend.
Some of us however have always struggled to make a living.
I have no private pension fund but don't worry, I will, like many before me, just fizzle out quietly.

1. Did your parents receive the winter fuel allowance when they reached retirement age? Answer: Nope
2. Why did you become of retirement age assuming that there would be such thing as a winter fuel allowance when the answer to question 1. Was Nope ?
3. Why should paying your bills be the responsibility of others who are also struggling in life but working hard to bring up children and pay for houses that are proportionally more expensive than your house was?

Perhaps it would have been better to start with the wealthy higher rate OAP taxpayers. I'd challenge any of you to live on £11500 a year.

Or pay a decent state pension to start with?
Oh

My father told me when I was 18 and first started work that if I wanted a decent standard of living in retirement I should start planning for it now because the State pension alone would not be enough. Roll on 35 years and pensioners are telling me that the state pension alone is not enough to live on.
No 💩.
It was never a secret and you would have to be pretty stupid to think that the OA Pension alone would be enough.

I never said they should pay my bills, that's why I have never claimed for anything.

I reared my only child, as I could only afford to raise one. I've also gone on to raise my granddaughter and I will be paying off my mortgage for another 8 years.

Regarding private pensions, I know an awful lot of people of working class that said it wasn't worth the paper it is written on!
Then there is the tax on it.
What I have paid into is not going to have any meaningful effect on my retirement!

As I said before I am happy for you but believe me, there are millions like me, not so fortunate ones.
And no, I do not expect the state to carry me, I do however resent the nanny state pretending to care but in reality not.
Take my national insurance contributions for instance.
For the same amount I could of had a glowing private pension and good health insurance but instead I've got to pay to house illegal immigrants, drug addicts and battered wives, non of which was my ****ing fault!
