Hi All,
I've got a litter of HWV at the moment and was planning on keeping one pup back but now thinking of keeping two.. anyone had two or more from the same litter? Just wondering how you got on etc and the pros and cons of doing this..

I was advised against it unless you have loads of time to train and exercise separately as siblings will listen to each other rather than the odd non doggy looking one.

Years ago I trained two sisters, and your bang on the money, most of the groundwork needed doing desperately and it was a long time before I could have them together, very time consuming.
As a consideration, we lost them both within 12 month of each other and that really hurt

Thanks for your input FRR.. much appreciated

We have two litter-sister teckels and the little buggers will have a proper spat about twice a year. They can spend months sleeping together then, one day, something will spark a scrap - a week later and they are back to normal. These two bitches have never worked out who is boss, they are very equal and thus have no natural hierarchy. This could well be a one-off but I think siblings often have less respect for each other. Training-wise - better to do them separately, 1-on-1 and you have a double work-load.

Sure you talking about dogs?

Post #2 is bang on the money, the pups are already bonded to each other and to make any progress you’ll have to train them separately and keep them apart.
It’s doable in a kennel situation but near impossible at home.

I'd say jimmy is bang on but its also true of any pups of a similar age not just litter siblings, any pup will always have to be trained seperately but it does double ur time and will most likely need to be walked seperately until good at walking to heel on a lead, with 2 or more very likely to start pulling even when then dont pull on there own.

Possible if u have the time and the set up to do it.
if it was me i'd try to keep the pups apart but 1 FT spaniel lad i know set up a puppy creche and all his young pups are in 1 big communal run, althou all trained seperately obviously, but he could be taking on anything up to10+ pups a year.
So possibly it doesn't matter that much if trained seperately or mibbee different with so many pups together don't form a strong bond to only 1 pup??

U also have other things to think about, introducing 2 dogs to the field at the same time
Having 2 dogs of the same age, so when they get older ur losing 2 dogs at the same/similar time, if u always need a trained dog/s it means u soon have a few dogs about u if u already have a middle aged dog in its prime under them and a pup coming on too, u might still have a retired dog hanging on aswell
U can quickly fill a kennel never mind a house

With 2 related dogs from the same litter u always have the chance of some freak genetic condition showing up even with health tests, heart murmor, cancer, epilepsy etc, if another owner also phones u to say his pup has the same would u really want to breed of the healthy pup from the same litter?
While it may be 100% healthy it could be a carrier that would continue in ur lines.
The above is quite unlikely but could and does happen sometimes

I meant to add

A few questions i would be asking 1st are aoart from do u have the time.
Wot age is the bitch? Are u hoping to have another litter of her in future?
Just how good is she compared to others in the breed? Good or truely exceptional? (and not just in your eyes but also in others that know dogs/the breed)
Do u already have a pup of her?
Do u have access/ know some of the other pup owners from her so could get a pup of them in future? ( assuming a few bitches)

Many folk do do it every year, esp FT lads if excited about a specific mating.

But with the best will in the world u'll never put the same time into each pup if u have 2 as u would if u just had the 1.
Much might depend on if u plan/have time to take another litter in the future

Thank you all for the replies, very informative and very much appreciated.
Only had this litter as I wanted a pup or two off my dog and this is the only time i intend to breed her but have decided just to keep one back and concentrate on him..
