Wooden High Seat Design

I am going to build myself a new freestanding wooden high seat but was wondering if there is a formula for height , width and angles to make it easier and smaller footprint. The thing I had in mind was similar to the umpires chair at Wimbledon. Any suggestions appreciated.

Hi

If you do a search for highseat designs or similar wording there have been plans/sketches etc. put up before, including material list.

I have made one of these. It’s good for two people. Just be sure to fix a post in the ground either side and bolt or tie the structure to the posts, otherwise a strong wind can blow it over.

Make the ladder at an 11 degree tilt off the vertical, use your hammer "top to bottom length" as a distance gauge for setting out the steps, put flagstones or similar under the legs to keep the wet earth from capilliaring up the end grain and causing premature rotting.

As we get a little older I’ve found 12” space between steps is comfortable for most people, 18” would be pushing it.

Willowbank.

Now put vertical pieces along the sides between the treads which makes them much safer as it secures the tread if a nail or two fail"s or if the antis start doing their righteous sh11te. Looks good though.
Oh an angled backrest needs to be added too, I always had backache till I put them on as you will do a lot of sitting and it relaxes you much better to lean back.

Those treads are actually notched into the uprights although it doesn't show well on the pic. This was our first build and we found this to be a very strong construction and have built many since. I've got dimensions somewhere If i can find I'll post.

I’d be interested in some plans please?

Quite similar to Firefly's version.., just finished this to hopefully go up North when Crankie will let us over the border again...

3x2" studding, decking timber, bolts from Wickes (and camo stain..)

I’d be interested in some plans please?

Here are the sizes not too difficult to work out what’s what. These are for the double version so reduce seat width to 600mm for single.

kind regards,
Ff.

Great thread
Just saying to a mate I’ve four to replace as they’ve deteriorated to a point where it’s curtains

Have also tried contacting Chasey but cannot find anything listed. I am more interested in a easy assembled freestanding one that I can put some sort of swivel seat in . There was a post on here somewhere someone used one branded askari and put a swivel seat on. Thanks for all the comments , anything considered.

Make sure you make the rungs easy for you to climb . We had the Fountain foresters build some for us . Unfortunately the head guy was 6ft 6 tall. He made the rungs to suit him. Needed climbing ropes to get up there!!!!! ...J
