Working GWP breeder recommendations

Afternoon all,
I’m hoping to get a GWP pup in July, predominantly for stalking with and for picking up on the pheasant shoot. Can anyone recommend breeders I should be keeping an eye on for litters, ideally in the northern half of the UK but further considered?
Thanks,
David

Try Rory Major.
Many good breeders have litters spoken for 12 months in advance.
However this forum is the best place to ask. There will be something available.

Lisa & Les Jones at Mustwork in Wales is where I got my latest GWP. Les is a gamekeeper and they work their own dogs on a pheasant shoot so should be right up your street.

Mandy and Robert Geary at Germanus have some nice dogs, and are based in Lancs, you can find them on face book. Also in the north are Maxine and Peter at Kimmax, don't know their dogs so well, but they look great and they have put dogs through Hegawald in Germany.

It's worth looking out for litters here and on German Wirehaired Pointer Club (UK)

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction Siggy and Trucraft. It was after reading an interview with Rory Major on HPR breeds that started me on the search for a GWP, but I'll have a look to see if Kimmax or Germanus have any litters coming up too.

Why not phone Rory up and ask him if his studs been used over anything that may suit your needs, be honest with yourself and him as to what you want the dog to do/be for and see what he says, he's a decent approachable guy

Was just going to say similar to wot Jimmy said, u haven't said wot u want the dog for.
A hot FT bred dog ( esp a male) can very easily be a handful and often too 'hot' for normal deer work or a bit off rough shooting.
FT breeding doesn't really have a lot in common for an average working dog, althou all depends on the parents/individual dogs.

Do ur homework and speak to loads of folk can be big variations between lines esp when some are more DD lines or more Danish, quite different looks and styles of dogs.

Jackie hay is well worth a bell (moor runner kennel) she's made up 2 wire ftchs now, both cracking dogs and cracking trmperments but very different styles.
She knows a lot of dogs/ breeders and will tell u straight.

Thanks guys, I rang Rory Major and he was really helpful and pointed me in the direction of a couple of breeders. I was concerned about the point countryboy also made about whether a very driven GWP from FT breeding would be suitable as a stalking dog, so I'm keeping my eyes peeled for litters from stalkers too.

I picked up my GWP pup from Sally-Ann Ware in Stafford she had a litter earlier this year , my pup has Germanus Kimmax and Bavere in his pedigree along with numerous others some FTCh and a mix of others he's turned out to be calm like his mother very biddable and naturally walks to heel when out with the gun or rifle without it being trained in him. Has a great nose and is retrieving feral pigeons with the air rifle at 16 weeks. Don't know if she plans any more litters this year but my point is even small time breeders are producing decent dogs in this breed and as long as healthy and well bred should do the job for you . Good luck in your search.
John.

I can certainly recommend Lisa and Les as good breeders. I picked up a pup from them a few years ago, I was interviewed on the phone by Lisa for almost an hour before they considered me a suitable owner for one of the pups as they want the absolute best for their dogs.
I am lucky enough to have a fab hunting and pointing machine on birds and great stalking companion who has got me out of the cack a few times when locating deer post shot, she is also the soppiest thing whilst indoors.
i will be looking for another Mustwork pup early next year.

Oh you got the hour long interview as well! Glad it wasn't just me then!! - Thinking about it, this just goes to show how seriously Lisa and Les take their puppy placement! - mine came out of a litter of 12 - so that's over a days work just sorting out the homes for those that make the grade!

Gave Rory M a call and was in luck! One of his studs Thomas was used with a breeder from the Suffolk/Essex area. The Dam was the daughter of Ekko another stud of Rory's.

Should be able to collect towards the end of July.

I will second Frank Duffy and if he doesn't have a litter will know all the top gamekeepers in the north east and borders who will be. Hows your lad coming along Ranger 22?

Very well, very easy going. Tracks beasts, starting to indicate beasts infront now. I keep in contact with Frank, enquired about another pup but it will be next year before he has a litter

I have a litter due in mid august. Breed to work and field trial. Both sire and Bitch are Open standard. Mines used for FT to open level( as is the sire),stalking, grouse, wildfowling picking up, tracking. Family breed dogs. German lines X Danish lines. KC registered. Not all FT lines are Hot.
