In October last year I lost my stalking companion of 9 years. An awesome dog I wrote about in this thread

It didn’t take me long to get back on the horse. I was looking for a new dog within a week and as luck would have it I found exactly what I was looking for from an SD member, @rms364

The Vizsla was a wonderful dog but I was after a breed that was a little more confident and a little more hardy in foul weather, so I went for a GWP. I wanted one from Danish lines as they are meant to be a little softer than the German dogs.

I picked Max up on 31st October. I had forgotten just how much of a pain in the arse a puppy can be. He was 9.7kg when we got him at 10.5 weeks, now at 26 weeks he’s 23kg. He is going to be a 34 kg dog I think. As Velcro as the Vizsla, but a little more strong willed. The Vizsla was easy, tell him off gently and he never did it again, yell at him and he would go cower in a corner and not come out for 30 minutes. The GWP will stick two fingers up if you’re too gentle, but go too harsh and you get the same 30 minutes cowering in the corner. I fine line to walk.

However, he’s bright, already well ahead of the Vizsla in what he can do, soaking up experienced and asking to be challenged. I’m amazed at what he’s doing at 6 months.

A long way to go but signs are good. Hopefully I have lucked out and got myself a second “dog of a lifetime”. He’s got big boots to fill.

Thank you Richard

I’d love a dog like that, great lines and good looking….. but I’ve three cockers which I think is enough for the time being….. one is 11 in May… so inevitable at some stage I’ll have another ( dog)

It’s good to get a new dog, a great way to begin again…. Especially after the heartbreak of losing one

Great to hear things are going to plan! Heard from all other owners and all say similar things as you. The dog pup I kept is also doing well and can’t believe they are only 6 months.
Glad he’s helping fill the void left by Bear and hope he gives you many years of stalking companionship!!
All the best
Rich
