Quad bike insurance?

Can anyone give any suggestions please....
having bought a quad bike which is not road registered, I enquirered with our insurer NFU about getting it listed on our contents insurance as an asset given that conventional 'vehicle' insurance wouldnt fit the bill as it was never intended for road use. NFU have checked with their underwriters and said they can't cover it at all, not even on a motorbike policy as it doesnt fit with their criteria....

all im interested in is insuring it as an asset so that if/when it gets stolen I can recoupe its value. Im quite sure if it was a ride on mower it would be covered by our house insurance policy.....

any suggestions?

pretty sure it will meet their criteria if you call it a 4wd tractor - very disappointed to hear that from NFU though, quads have become a day to day agricultural/horticultural tool/machine.

Mine was insured with NFU on a tractor insurance policy but the premiun has rocketed so now changed provider but mine is road registered.

ours are insured with nfu as part of the whole estate vehicles policy premiums ok but unless quad is locked away or locked down via tow bar clamp they tend to not be keen on paying out , I suppose they are just too nickable

I found it impossible to insure an argo for recreational stalking use, unless i lied and then they would void the insurance, i was actually encouraged to do this by one insurance company. I was told to say it was locked on a garage on its trailer or that it was a kit car under construction , total nonsense!
I would be keen to know of a company who will insure it, but as it is i simply block it in with a car and lock the trailer.

Have you tried listing it as a named item of value on your household policy ? I would advise you nevertheless disclose what it is and make sure you meet any locked away/garaged conditions, as almost all insurers, gievn the slightest chance will duck it. My tractor was a named item on our household policy as was the ride-on lawnmower.
Stunned NFU cant or wont insure it - I thought they would insure anything which moved under its own power and some that didnt !!!

mines covered with NFU and for its intended purpose, being used off road and for extracting dead deer. £270 fully comp I think

I got mine registered as 'Limited Use' for the taxation class and applied for MOT exemption and insured it through NFU. It allows me to do up to 1km on the road.
MS

It's 1.5km for a 'limited use' vehicle and 6 miles a week for MOT exemption.

Straight Agricultural Machine registration (Light Agricultural Vehicle and not limited) doesn't appear to have any such restrictions that I can find, although no MOT is required and RFL is free, and might be the better option. Anyone know different or have a link?

I don't need/want to go down the road register route as it would need a full light kit and all that gubbins. I just want it insurered to the value it cost/or is worth and be done with it, lee, £270 sounds a lot for what is in effect no more valuable than any one of my rifles which are covered for pennies as additional items to the home insurance, £270 is getting close to my annual premium on my hilux!

Mine's not road registered, and I can't get it road registered (due to not being able to get a type approval certificate for it from Suzuki because it was imported before a certain date). However, I've had no bother insuring it with NFU on the same policy as my tractor. Just gave them the chassis number in lieu of numberplate.

I am suprised you are struggling with this one. Maybe ring back and try again, dont mention road use/registeation, it will confuse them. Simple, a quad bike, insured for theft like a mower or mountainbike. Lives in a shed, mine was and extra £35 p.a for £5000 cover.

precisely how I would have expected it to be, I'll give them a second chance tomorrow but I doubt they will play!

I've been back to NFU and no joy, I explained that I believed there were other customers of their our there able to get insurance with them for exactly what I have described but they have flatly refused......
To say I am most disappointed with NFU is an understatement,

Really it comes down to how valuable your quad is to you, mine is worth its weight in gold to me and there for i do not sniff at the premium.

£270 per year for my quad valued at £3000 is a no brainer as far as i am concearned!

Another thing i like about NFU is they understand what you want it for (well the branch i deal with do anyway!), you do pay a little more but atleast im dealing with someone less than 10miles down the road if i have a problem.
