UKSHA are proud to announce another team in the UK that have passed our Verein Hirschmann Schweißhundprüfung.
Paul Smith and Anni successfully completed and actually excelled within their Prüfung.
All of us are very proud of Paul and thank Donna,his wife,for her constant support to Paul.
This superb result was 8758,a high second prize.
We all wish Paul and Anni,as a team,a long and successful tracking career and onto the next step,Hauptprüfung,the future is very,very bright for this cog in the UKSHA wheel.
I,personally,am very proud of Pauls achievements with Anni.

LDNS supporting UK Scent Hound Association (UKSHA) – forthcoming events in Scotland

The UKSHA is pleased to announce two events supported by the Lowland Deer Network Scotland (including SNH, Forestry Commission Scotland and Transport Scotland), the British Deer Society, the KBGS e.V, the Verein Hirschmann e.V and the ISHV.

Two very experienced judges, one from KBGS and the other from the Verein Hirschmann, both ISHV qualified members of the groups who train people in Germany, and also on the Committee of the clubs in Germany, are coming to Scotland

Check out German Kälberer and Joachim Schweizer on the Schweißhundestation Alb-Schurwald website. They will be conducting the seminars – both these men are experts with real time experience in training people and dogs to track wounded animals.

Event 1 – Friday 30 September 19.00 – 21.00hrs
County Hotel, Dalkeith EH22 1AY

This seminar will cover:

  • The psychology of dogs; learned behaviour based on the genetic disposition of a dog
  • The requirements of both sire and dam before breeding
  • How to breed and raise healthy, strong minded, efficient and capable hunting-dogs for training and work with wild boar, red deer, sika deer, fallow and roe deer.
  • Question and discussion session.
Event 2 – Sunday 2 October
Semeil Farm, Strathdon, Aberdeenshire AB36 8XJ

Shot site seminar
0930 - 1030 Theory part 1
1030 - 1045 Coffee break
1045 - 1200 Theory part 2
1200 - 1300 Lunch (please bring your own lunch)
1300 - 1630 Practical

This seminar gives the theory required and also demonstrates the practical side of the shot site; how to determine what to do after the shot - and what not to do.

It is hoped that these events will generate more interest in this aspect of deer and boar welfare.

Cost for both events is FREE – as is the tracking of wounded animals undertaken by UKSHA.

Aye aye CB,
Its as above mannie,the psychology of dogs,concerning training and other parts of dog work,including working with boar.This part of the seminar is also not concerning hounds-all dogs.....any breed.....
When it mentions breeding of dogs it is about the desired requirements that any person should be looking for when breeding their own dog.
Not so much about breeding hounds,as the reasons for breeding specific dogs and why and how to raise them to get the desired dogs to fulfil their natural ability.
Obviously as we are involved with hounds,we can touch on this if asked,questions will be welcomed and answered.
Any questions on anything concerning dogs can be asked.
Training,working,breeding anything.

I had a very young Anni on a leash following Paul and Klaus on a very long and testing trail! Apart from nearly puling my arms off - she picked up a couple of extremely minor indicators that Paul and Klaus had missed. I thought then that she was a very promising little dog which is now proved. I look forward to working closely with them in the future. Very well done!

Had a call Saturday afternoon,a stag was shot at 1300.


I got the call at 1600.
Before I could get up there it would have been around 2000,only 1 hour before dark.Too late to track Saturday night.


I told the stalker to back out and take his dog away from the track.
I set off at 0400 Sunday morning.
Got up there for 0800.
A stunning morning with a stunning view of the Moray/Cromarty Firth.


We set off for the shot site,which was very hard to find,a few spots of blood and then nothing at all on the track until around 100m from where we found the animal.


A lot of deer in this area,an awful lot,numerous deer runs.Lot of sign of deer.
Pascha did some very good leash work and corrected himself numerous times,the stag had ran off crossing numerous well used runs.
The age of the track was 19 hours and 2.5km long.
Animal was dead at the end of the track.


A happy stalker and client,a happy Pascha and a very proud George.

Back leg into gut.
Animal had been stood quartered off at shot.
Covered a long way with that wound as well.Shows the value of backing off and not pushing the animal.

I needed it,thought my ticker was going to explode on one of the faces.Steep,real steep,Pascha pulling helped;)
 
Quick post to thank Paul Smith of the UKSHA for helping me recover a buck that I couldn't find last night, the UKSHA and other such organisations offer their time free of charge to all stalkers and should be applauded for doing this.
It doesn't matter how much experience you have or even if like me you have a tracking hound, sometimes it just doesn't go to plan and last night was one such time, having stalked into a group of bucks one eventually presented a shot, 80 meters side on, using a 150 grain Sako Hammerhead, all should be well.
I gave it a few minutes and went with certainty to collect the buck, no Buck despite a quick look, so I returned within 30 minutes with my old Bavarian, he found the shot site, exactly where expected, after 45 minutes of searching in the rain, still no deer.
It's not a good feeling, knowing (hoping) the shot was good and leaving an animal unaccounted for, once home I called Paul and discussed the next move.
This morning Paul and Steve Williams arrived as arranged, we went to the shot site and went through the scenario, Paul harnessed his young Hanoverian and set off through what could've described as difficult conditions, basically deer crossing all over the area since last night with some still in the section of wood to search, anyway Paul let her do her thing and 30 minutes later had found a very dead deer, no real blood trail, no exit wound, opposite direction I expected and about 150 meters from the shot site.
And he gave me a hand extracting the carcass.
