Black Russian Terrier

Looked into this breed for working deer earlier this year. The strong headiness of it put me off a wee bit plus the lack of information regarding them working deer. I wouldn't say never but if it doesn't work out as a worker it's some size of a dog to feed and keep in the house!

If you go for it, keep me informed please. I'm still toying with the idea but don't want to be the first to take the plunge!

She was an amazing dog. IIRC my parents got her when I was around 6 and she lived till I was 18. I can still remember riding on her back. She was however extremely and I mean extremely protective. To the point one night the police were charging up the lane chasing someone with their GSD and Bella got out and had the GSD pinned up against a wall ready to rip the **** out of it or die trying. Given the nature of BRT heritage I doubt there would be much difference plus having a 40kg dog around the house was a bit of a pain. She was though for all her faults an amazing dog and very loving and kind.

I realise this is an old thread but a guy went to the BMHS training days with a BRT. BIG dog. It was apparently very good. Look back on the BMHS facebook page or search Chad Russell on there.

A Rhodesian ridgeback is also known as a lion hound. It is classed as a hound and will track. Contract stalker in Easter Ross uses one. ☺

I am thinking on the lines of a Bracco Italiano, stunning dogs. Still at the point of looking into the training.

I have two, and they are indeed stunning dogs. They're not the easiest dogs to train, but by no means the hardest either. Very clever, sensitive and funny. Let us know how you get on.

Bit late now.
But thought why not.
They are not the first breed someone would choose. Or the second or third choice!
But personally I would not use any other breed.
Like any breed you have to get the right one inclined to track, as they are stubborn. Again there are other breeds more inclined.
But my boy was excellent tracker. Trained him for search and rescue. A deer was no trouble what so ever. When he was young you needed a lead on him. But otherwise excellent breed for tracking. He was particular, he would go round puddles and such but always picked up the scent.
I would recommend moderator. And you can even get dog ear defenders now, who knew.
