Hi Guys
Looking for some advice & opinions on a decent SH .243 for stalking, budget £1000-2000 ish although its really dependant on whether I have to buy optics and moderator on top. My only wish would be a non-wooden stock.

Thanks in advance

Andrew

You'll get a brand new tikka package all in for under 2k. Check Livens website or Countryman of Derby websites. It will give you some ideas. Plus for that money you could pick up a cracking set up on this site

have a look at Livens gunroom

Tikka T3, S&B 8x56 (2xh) and wildcat mod should be a good place to start, if you can get a GRS stock this will help if you are over 6ft, you should be able to get all that for 2K!

Other option and something I've been looking at quite closely is the sauer 100 XT, seems to me to have one or two benefits over the tikka (at least from the way I look at it for my purposes) of a 5 round magazine and a 3 position safety (things I like but may not be to everyone else's liking). It also has a large enough ejection port to enable top loading of the magazine and is able to take any remington 700 scope mounts which there opens up a huge variety of mounting options. Comes in at £850 which is pretty comparable (potentially slightly cheaper) to the tikka and easy to find a scope/moderator for and it will come in under budget/similar to the price of the tikka deal.

Go to a gun shop and pick a few rifles up and see what ones you like and are comfortable with and what ones fit you best.

Go look at the Bergara B14 wont go far wrong around £750 new excellent rifle and will give you a better option for good glass and mounts.

Winchester XPR or Bergara B14 would be my choice with a DPT moderator and DNZ scope mounts - leaving you plenty of cash for a good scope. Tikka T3 or T3X is a bit more expensive but very good.

Go for the cheapest used .243W you can find from a reputable RFD (it will do the job!) , and spent the money saved on superior bino's.

Thanks for the input thus far, is the saving worth trying to get a 2nd hand scope and how much do you have to pay in your opinion for a "good" scope

They look like decent packages for a good price whats your opinion on the scopes included.

I like Schmidt & Bender but I have a swarovski as well. Both are fixed mag. A 8 mag is plenty for stalking and there's a few come up on here regular. Can't go far wrong with swaro Zeiss or S&b. Look through a few

a secondhand schimidt 8x56 is going to cost you about £375 also put aside £100 for mounts and rings a mod is your choice if you want one or not but lets say another £300 for that if new so lets say give or take you have a grand to play with which will get you a shinny new tikka stainless synthetic and ammo plus sling and you will have a preety much new set up,......or just have a hunt around and find a perfectly servicable 2nd hand set up and save yourself easily £1000 the deer wont notice the differnce

With a budget of 1-2k I would spend £250 on a second hand Parker Hale, £200 on Second hand Swarovski 6x42 Mounts £50-£100? then spend the rest on some fabulous stalking possibly a week on the Hinds in Scotland.:-D
Tusker.

Sorry guys, just read the original post if you want a plastic stock I would go for a Howa. Apply the rest of my comments to that.

I'd second the Sauer 100xt....that's a proper gun for tikka money, the other alternative is the Mauser m12 impact, again a lot of gun for about £1200 including fluted barrel and mount. I see your in Devon, both Blue fox and Ivythorn have both these guns in stock (I think??)...either one will serve you well.

Buy a blaser r93
Sound advice.

I started off with a cheap s/h rifle from a reputable RFD. Apart from the barrel being shot out and the scope not suitable for a c/f rifle there was not a lot wrong with it.

I disposed of both and went to a s/h Blaser r93 with a new 6 x 42 S&B Hungarian scope, this proved to be a good combination.

Blaser rifles hold their value, I was able to trade it in for much the same as I had paid for it when I got a new r8.

Bought a Ruger stainless, plastic stocked animal 20+ years ago,Swarovski 8x56 still does half inch group at 100 yds with home loads.
Got Norman Clarke to work on the trigger, never let me down tet.
