Remington 700 scope base - aluminum or steel?

Looking at the options available for a Remington 700 SA, I am torn between the steel or hardened aluminum scope base mounts. I'm looking at the Recknagel and the Schultz and Larsen Picatinny rails available at Alan Rhone.
Any advice or considerations to be aware of?

None of the above. Why pay more for what US makers do at better value and IMHO as good a quality.

You have the wisdom to have chosen a rifle that is the benchmark of mid quality American factory rifles. So a whole huge selection of American made good quality mounts and rings will and are available. Pretty much everything you might want.

Why spend a fortune on Recknagel or S and L when Leupold and all the other US makers will have what you want in spades? I'd maybe venture into some of the US Forums and be specific as to your intended 'scope size and intended use. The advice will be interesting.

You'll get then, if successful, lots of advice but with two or three makes that will stand above the rest as advised as being the best.

Thanks for the advice enfieldspares, I'll venture over the water (in fora land) and see what comes up. I did think that for a one piece Picatinny rail the Recknagel and S&L bases were reasonably priced considering Badger Ordnance one piece is about $160

I'm a fan of 2 piece bases with burris signature rings (plastiv gymball type inserts). That combination deals with any tolerance problems without transfering stresses to the scope or action.

Warne 2 piece Weaver bases and their regular vertical split rings. Steel. Affordable. You can spend a ton more if you want, and you might get something a little more attractive, but I doubt you or the deer will notice any difference.

I've had my Ally bases on my .243 700 for 6 1/2 years, my Kahles was on it for 5 years and know the z6 sits on top.

They have never moved, I put a little bit of mid strength thread lock on the screws and that is it.

My Rem 700 .270 has a long action steel rail with the same thread lock...

I have leupold bases on my SA 700, been there for 7/8 years, they do as you'd expect hold the scope onto the action. They are not fancy but they do the job they are intended to do and don't cost the earth. I have a Ken Farrell rail on my LA, it is no better than the leupold mounts. Costs more and the action still flexes.

I went for a steel rail purely because I know I'd be swappi g between day and night vision regularly so wanted the (maybe unnecessary??) peace of mind that it was less likely to deform over many clamping and removing of steel QR rings than an aluminium rail.

As said many times above, the Weaver aluminum 2-piece set or rail will work fine. Their rails and clones from American makers, are about $25.00 on eBay or Amazon. I have had a set on the Weaver 2-piece on a 700 in .30-06 for 50 years ( there was nothing else then ), and it nothing has never moved out of alignment.

I have Warne steel bases on another M700, and Warne stainless bases on an M700 BDL SS. Warne, Burris or Leupold QRW rings all work great. Nikon makes some clones of the Warne rings for permanent mount, which are half the price of Warne, but made in the USA.

I sourced recknagel ally bases from Alan Rhone for £25 ish and Bauer ally rings also from them for £35 ish. Inexpensive and works.

Other remmy has Tier 1 rail and mounts - very nice but 3x price......
